As I said, I have no good explanation at the physical/chemical level. But eyewitness testimony at least shows that the problem lies with the annealing process. The fellow I talked to described nickel planchets fresh out of the annealing oven with all the colors we're familiar with. He also described piles of nickel planchets that were fused together. So the heat these planchets are exposed to is near the melting point and sometimes exceeds it.

 

Jazz since you decided to post an old long in the ground nasty old coin. I decided to post a few newer ones. As you can see there is flaking of the layers also. This coin was dug and not too long ago. If your slabs then these will slab also. Ice

Ftrst of all there;s a differrance in the apperance on the rim on my coin to your dug up coin, my coin shows copper on the rim and on the surfaces of my coin and the color of your coin is alot differerent then mine. like i said which you are not comprehending aparently

My coin has the appearance of a greyish chacoal color with flakingoff at the surfaces and the rim exposing a copper alloy not dirt if you can;t tell the differance between dirt and copper do some research on the subject

.Your coin looks like it was in a fire it;s a black color not greyish that;s why yours is falking off not from the ground ,and the surface of your coin exposes nickel not mine wrong.Go back an look at the sinthered planchets not one will expose any nickel on there surfaces.
