What I don't understand is 50 years ago the 1 kopeck was almost certainly a copper alloy, Copper is a biologically reactive metal. It should have caused all kinds of pain and abscesses etc. How could he tolerate that being up there that long?

There was a story of a very young toddler in Australia who got a 1958 3p stuck in his voicebox and was never able to speak. In his mid-20's a doctor finally xRayed and found it. A simple procedure and the man could speak normally.
huh, you would think that when he needed to blow his nose it would have come out, you know because there is plenty of natural lubricant (aka snot) up there, or a good sneeze. man it must have been way on up there....
Nasal anatomy is kind of surprising. There's a lot more room in there than you'd think. (Also, we actually have four nostrils.)
The kopeks were an aluminum bronze mixture. Even in 1970's era Soviet mintsets they often corrode in the packaging.
