I'm sure many collectors already know this as I do too? Always buy graded coins. Last 6 as I cant pass them Damage VG Arrows, Fine Cleaned, XF 98 damage Ex Jewelry, XF Cleaned, and xf ? 1 for 6!! all gold or high rarity's figures!

Translation please - anyone?

 

Yup, always graded from ebay. And even then, with multiple full, clear, in focus pics.

I am new to coins and don’t know what I am doing. Nevertheless I purchased six expensive raw coins on eBay. All but one came back from PCGS as “details-cleaned” or “details-damaged”. I realized that I just wasted a lot of money. Now I promise to only buy certified coins from trusted sellers

 

You should educate yourself first before buying. Buy the books before the coins.

You are new to coins and yet admit you don't know what you are doing. I applaud your honesty.

At least if you bought certified coins, you'd know what you were getting and what FMV was.

The last time I checked, it was possible to leave a follow-up to feedback you've left on eBay, with no time limit. I was able to leave a follow-up on feedback from early 2000! Buyer and seller can each leave one follow-up per feedback. Once you've left it, you can't edit or withdraw it, and you can't leave another.

If you haven't left feedback for these purchases, and still can, describe your experience there. If you did leave feedback, consider leaving follow-up comments with your experience.

 

The better lesson is "don't send details coins to PCGS".

Oh yeah, I'd say a very low percentage of coins on ebay will straight grade. most of them you can't tell from the pics what's wrong with them. Very poor photos, some likely on purpose.

I've been lucky with a couple. I sent in a raw 3 cent silver and got an AU-58 and a nice 2 cent with luster that got a MS65 RB from NGC. Paid far less than MS65 money for it. But these are the exceptions. I'm about to take another chance soon, though I don't know why. Something I really need for my type set and hard to come by. Have to see if I get it. Pics are mediocre. Waiting for grades can be entertaining though.

No. It’s easy if you’re not buying blind. I’ve had the opposite experience buying raw on Ebay and near all have straight graded. I say near as 1 came back cleaned. My first 3 raw were purchased for $110 total. Those 3 I sold for $11,200, granted they were proofs. At that time I used to say I don’t even know what I’m doing, and had limited knowledge beyond hitting the buy button. While I continued with the proofs I also transitioned to business strikes without issues. Those also straight graded and I stuck with those sellers. Some are known for selling junk.
I will say that my series focused on coins from the 1940’s up and I suspect it’s more difficult with 100 yr old coins if you don’t spend the time and depending on the price there’s likely a reason their not already graded.

I'm not new to coins but there are times I wonder if I know what I'm doing. One thing I do know, don't buy expensive raw coins on Ebay! I assume that most of them are details coins (damaged, cleaned, ...). If the coins were original then the seller would have most likely sent them in to a TPG for grading. In some instances they may have sent them in but they came back with details designation. They then cracked them out of their slabs and tried to sell them as raw, hoping that someone would pay a higher price guessing that the coin was original.
