While not the best images, this is a nice 14-D. This date is a weakly struck date by most accounts ( see Lange book ), as can be seen by the weakness in the wheats. It IS genuine, and you can guess away at the grade. I'm crashing on the couch untill tonight. EDIT Rlm, no guess's for you , you were with me when I bought it
AU 50 BN, Traces of light wear on the high points. Very slight wear on the cheek, jaw and wheat stalks
Hard to judge from the pictures, but there looks to be a little rub on the cheek, beard and forehead....based on the pics, AU55-58. This coin could easily slide into the MS60-62 range if there's no wear evident on the head.
XF-40 - looks like the bowtie and the coat are worn down to the point where the are merged. The top of the ear is worn flat, and on the reverse it appears nearly all of the kernels in the left-hand stalk are blended. Wear all over the coat (not only the lapel but also the back of the coat), the beard, the cheekline and jawline (while separated, it's not sharply separated), even the eyebrow, forehead and high points of the hair. Plus tiny nicks all over the rim visible on the obverse. It's a really nice specimen, but when you compare it to mint-state example (http://www.coinfacts.com/small_cents/lincoln_cents/wheat_ear_cents/1914d_cent.htm), it's easy to see just how much detail is worn down (compare especially the ear, the detail in the coat lines, and the bowtie).
Nice coin! Let me cipher a grade - hmm XF45 probably bumped to AU53. Yep - sounds about right. Very nice coin Jack.
If there's a touch of wear (I can't tell) then it's and AU-55 or -58. No wear and it easily makes MS-63BN.
