Weak strike

Can a coin have a weak strike on obverse and a normal strike on the reverse?

No - a weak strike coin should have light or
missing design elements on both sides.

If there's missing design elements on one side
only, it's probably from a grease filled die.

Let me ask you this. If you put a coin in a vise, would it be possible for the pressure to be greater on one side than the other?

If it's equal pressure-no

 

Well the coining press applies equal pressure to both sides of the coin during striking.

 

While the striking pressure on both sides is the same...the wear state of the obverse vs. reverse die may not be. So...if one side is struck with a more worn die you may get one side that looks weaker.

 

Please cite an instance when the pressure could be unequal.

 

Looking like a weak strike from a worn die and striking pressure are two different things.

 

I completely agree. I was trying to come up with a reason why a coin might look weak on one side only. This seemed the most likely outside of some kind of PMD.

 

It is a concept that the OP seems unable to grasp.

 

Well, all we can do is provide the correct information. It’s up to the OP what they do with it.

 

How about if you put one coin side against leather and the other against a steel plate?

 

Is that a technique that the US Mint uses?

There is too much light on the reverse to say it what happened. I am on the PMD side of the fence.

 

But how--only one side looks worn and it's in the middle?
