Been wanting to get a Claudius Gothicus for a while. I had decided I wanted a well centered coin of Him, that just made it harder on making a purchase so I never really looked to much. Well I bought not just one but two of them. The first one has the typical Cladius Gothicus looking face but the second one does not look like the majority of them out there so I decided I wanted it also. Claudius II, Gothicus, 268-270 AD Æ Antoninianus, (4.15 grams , 21mm) Antioch Mint. IMP C CLAVDIVS AVG, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right NEPTV-N AVG, Neptune standing left, holding dolphin and trident A in exergue. RIC214 Claudius II Gothicus, 268-270 AD AE Antoninianus (3.96 grams , 22mm). Rome mint. Struck 268-269 AD. IMP C CLAVDIVS AVG, radiate and cuirassed bust right FELIC-ITAS AVG, Felicitas standing left, holding caduceus and cornucopiae. RIC 32
Both are nice, the first one stands out being so well executed. That one isn't nice, but is where he got his "gothicusness" from Claudius II "Gothicus", Antoninianus - Cyzicus mint, AD 269. IMP CLAVDIUS P F AVG, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right. VICTORIAE GOTHIC, Two captives leaning besides a trophy. 3.08 gr Ref : RCV # 11381; RIC V pt. 1 # 252; Cohen # 308 This antoninianus comemorates Claudius II' victory against Goths at Naissus, thus becoming "Gothicus" Q
Claudius Gothicus would make a cool specialty area. There are numerous different coins, different mints, and they -- for the most part -- are not expensive. This one is my favorite one because of the depiction of Isis with her sistrum and situla. Claudius II Gothicus, AD 268-270. Roman billon antoninianus, 4.07 g, 22.4 mm, 5 h. Antioch, officina 5, issue 1, end 268-end 269. Obv: IMP C CLAVDIVS AVG, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust, right. Rev: SALVS AVG, Isis standing left, holding sistrum and situla; Є in exergue. Like my friend @Roman Collector , I agree that Claudius II would be a nice speciality area. Lots of different portraits and reverses. I like both yours, the one from Rome especially. I have 3 of his coins, so not exactly specialized.... Claudius II Gothicus, AD 268-270. AR Antoninianus. Antioch mint. Obverse: IMP C CLAVDIVS AVG, radiate, draped bust right, seen from the back. @bcuda......Both are very nice coins indeed!...The first has a lovely portrait but what stands out to me is the really nicely detailed Neptune reverse!.....Good pick ups!
Not sure I've seen Gothicus look that good Big coingrats! For a guy who was only around for 2 years Claudius II did a ton to stabilize the empire and set up Aurelian to restore the world in his short 5 years at the top. My 2 CGII:
Great coins! I'm trying to specialize in this time period so, while I still don't have many coins, I do have a few nice ones. Here are my most interesting: Claudius II (268-270), Antoninianus, Siscia mint, 4th emission (Late 270), 1st officina. Obverse: IMP CLAVDIVS AVG, radiate, cuirassed right-facing bust. Beautiful details on both coins ! Congrats ! Claudius II. Gothicus Antoninianus, Rome mint. IMP CLAVDIVS AVG, radiate and cuirassed bust right. Rev: MARTI PACIFERO / X in right field, Mars advancing to front, head left, holding olive branch, spear and shield.
I don’t know why... but I love Claudius II coins. Below are a few pics that I have handy on my phone. Here’s one that’s really ugly but you don’t see often. I’d like to find one in great condition without spending what it would probably go for. RIC 256 RIC 252v Don’t have the attribution handy RIC 171 RIC 172 RIC 159
..hehe...you came to mind as soon as i saw this thread..(i wonder why)..congrats on your 1st @bcuda ..i searched for two days thru over 1000 files for this...(and couldn't find it)..its so much faster and easier just to take anutter pic.....i love this one cause its got a counting board on the reverse...(i can count the coins on it)
