im looking for the value of this , the condition is rough but this coin has really strong details especially on obverse , what do you think >
It's a fairly common coin, but in very high demand. I went to VCoins, typed in "Sestertius Judea Capta" and got these for comparison.
The surfaces are a deal breaker for me. IMHO, a $500 coin. Two of those coins from that search I have owned at one time. Small world!
I believe the world of ancient coin collectors is a pretty small world, yes. How many may there be of us? 15-20 000? Or even less?
This coin hammered @Auction for $550 Sep. 2019 -- Stephen Album Rare Coins. https://www.sarc.auction/ROMAN-EMPIRE-Vespasian-69-79-AD-AE-sestertius-25-85g-F_i34098201 LOL
Indeed! And "demand" is a strong driver of value. I paid $1K for mine over 5 years ago. And I have not a single regret about the price tag despite the visible flaws. Vespasian, Emperor, AD 69-79. "JUDAEA CAPTA" commemorative series. Æ Orichalcum Sestertius. Struck in Rome, AD 71. Obv.: IMP CAES VESPASIAN AVG PM TR P P P COS III. Laureate head, right. Rev.: IVDEA CAPTA, SC ex.; palm tree, mourning Jewess sitting to the right, male captive standing left, behind him a pile of weapons, shields and helmet. Diameter: 34.4 mm. Weight: 26.3 grams. Attrib.: RIC II, part 1, 161 (R2). BMC 534. Hendin 1500.b. Notes: Full centering, complete legend. Many examples (if not most examples) of these types have been noticeably smoothed or tooled. On this exemplar the obverse has had only slight smoothing behind the head and in front of the nose and chin area, while the reverse is original with no smoothing/tooling. [Purchased from FORVM; ex-Jeff Michniak collection.]
