Ok, here is a pretty unusual Peace Dollar in terms of color. Peace Dollars rarely tone anywhere near as dramatically as Morgans. 1923s, NGC MS 63*
Quite some color for a peace dollar! 5.8 I wonder if I've actually seen a peace I'd call a monster. Maybe I'm under-rating this one. Hmmm. Edited to correct autocorrect.
I'm torn on this one... To me it's a lipstick on a pig conundrum. It sure is a pretty color, but the host coin is just awful. I'll go a 5.2, but only because I know how hard a nicely toned Peace Dollar is to find. But the grade dragged it down for me. The bright side of this, is that this post reminded me of a slue of coins I shot for a client a couple of years ago. It's opened up a large inventory for me to dig into. The owner does not mind either.
It is absolutely spectacular in person. I saw it at a show in Vegas. Been watching that coin for 8 years. It is a former Aurora Borealis coin. You just do not find better toning on a Peace Dollar. Even as a 63, it also has fabulous luster. It is also under graded, in my opinion.
I'm going to revise my original assessment. I looked back over a collection of Peace Dollars, and man, this one is actually REALLY nice for a toned Peace Dollar. I wan't to raise it to a 6.1. I still wish the host coin was a higher grade, but those colors and magentas are impressive.
Yeah, I will believe you on that. I just reviewed a toned registry set of Peace Dollars I shot and the one you posted beats them all!! Now it does not compare with the grades in the registry set, but from an eye appeal assessment, it has them all beat.
Exactly. It may have some chatter, but even then, I don’t see it as less than a 64. The toning just glows, and it explodes in one’s hand. You are quite right—I have owned hundreds of Peace Dollars, and have seen thousands. There is not a single one out there with that kind of toning. Storage conditions for Peace Dollars did not normally match Morgans, so this is, indeed, a one of a kind coin.
I'll slide it into monster and give it a 6.0 ...Peace Dollars are rare with "monster" color and even those that have it really don't compare to a Morgan (which can make it harder to give them high scores).
I forgot to rate the 23s Peace Dollar, with all of the discussion. I will go 6.6, as it has toning that, to me, is solid monster. This coin is unique and special. I hope more members weigh in on this coin, as it is an archetype for toned Peace Dollars, despite the sub-gem grade.
Oh man that’s spectacular peace dollars never come this pretty and agreed looks 64 to me too solid monster 6.0
Ok, time to wake this thread up again. Have a look at this 1915s Panama Pacific, PCGS MS 66. It is another Aurora Borealis coin.
Something is off with the colors on the Pan-Pac (particularly the obverse). I'm at 4.5. Pretty but not monster.
