Leave the poll off next time. I think the choices may have affected who voted what.

Lot of coin for AU money, regardless.

Nothing wrong with a little trickery. If I put AU58 on the poll, I think I would have been figured out without looking at the coin.

what purpose does it serve? I don't understand what your attempting to communicate.

it looks like a prime reslabbing candidate. But then why wouldn't have someone done that already?

Where is the wear? :D That is one heck of a 58, if it is indeed one.

FWIW, I suspect the coin is overdipped and suspect a silent net grade which yielded the AU grade.

    Regardless, a very attractive coin.

I think you must be right, because I don't see the wear even in my photos. FWIW, the luster doesn't look impaired by the dip job.

Its AU, its hard to tell with some SLQs because often a weak strike can look like wear, but 24 was a relatively strong strike year, they modified the dies a bit and weren't using worn out dies. If it was a later date or S MM I would lean more towards a weak strike. If it hadn't been dipped I am sure that you would have seen some discoloration on the head, knee, shield and eagle breast or wing ridge. I can see subtle signs of wear in some pics, but in other pics it doesn't look as bad. I could tell if I had it in hand, but I think AU is an understandable grade.

In hand maybe, but not based on those pics. I can't see it either. But Mike is probably correct about the luster.

Here is what I see, I collect UNC SLQs and have looked at alot, Im not 100% sure I am right but it looks to me that on all the highpoints I usually look for there is evidence of wear, not worn down but evidence of circulation, just like if there were a discoloration it would be a sign. On the areas I circled, you can see the highpoints are smoother and have less sheen than the surrounding areas, on the eagle breast it is pretty evident. Again, could be the pics, if it was dipped it could be throwing me off too, or if it was an unusualy weak strike that could throw me off as well. But this is MHO based on years of looking at SLQs.

It's a subtle kind of thing, in my experience, Paul. And in this case it really worked FOR you, if you catch my drift. I wish I could find a typeset full of AU's that look like that! The coin's wonderful strike more than makes up for it, IMO. As you know, it's very very difficult to find a type 2/3 SLQ fully struck -- it's a coin that's been on my list for three years now and I've yet to find a nice one, and I'd take your coin in a second. :)

This coin reminds me of something said by a collector I've learned a lot from... They would call this coin a "head scratcher". A coin which looks clearly undergraded at first glance. Far more often than not, there's something that you're not seeing -- light hairlines, slightly impared luster, a rim dent hidden by the holder, etc. Still market acceptable, but net graded for it.... or at least that's my story -- and I'm sticking to it. :D

Anyway, I hope to someday get to see that coin over a beer -- SLQs are one of my favorite designs, and that's a stunner!

    Have a nice weekend...Mike
