This one is advertized in a coin catalog I received in the mail today. Not going to mention the name of the company so don't ask. They are located in New England. This thread isn't designed to slam them or their company name.

A 296 Coin set including two archival albums.

1909-1955 Wheaties are in good to ertra Fine condition.

    -key dates it includes 1909 S VDB, 1909 S, 1914 D, 1910 S, 1911 S, 1912 S, and the 1922 Plain.

1956-2008 are mint uncirculated and includes S proofs from from 68-2008.

    Price $6,546.00

How overpriced is this? Especially not knowing the condition of the key dates.

I know who's catalog you are talking about...

Seems a bit pricey to me...

That is impossible to answer with only the info you have. Using just the 09-S VDB, 14-D and 22- (weak or strong?), in good and weak are about $1100 (the most likely case), but in XF and strong are about $5300.

FWIW, the balance of the coins would be between $1000 and $2000 at most.

The ad doesn't mention weak or strong so I'm assuming weak. I'm also assuming that the Key dates are in good and not XF.

Who would buy this not knowing the actual grades of the key dates?

A better question - who would try to sell it without giving the grades? My guess is they will get what they deserve - a bill for the advertising and nothing more.

A lot of people who don't know anything about coins.

Someone looking to make a killing from the people in the answer to the first question.

Seems like a very high price to me.

In a g/vg/f, for about $1300/$1500 you should be able to assemble the keys, SVDB, 09S,14D and 31S with some looking

The 22 requires more specifics, weakD? noD ? die # ? etc. The range in a F could be from $50 to $1200

Another $1200/$1400 can put you into a nice circ 55 DDO in f/vf or so

The rest of the set is trivial, and I would imagine only the common P mints would be in XF, the semi's are just too tough, and I am sure they scrimped on them.

EDIT: I'll add this, for those looking for a complete set in a Dansco at a "reasonable" ( retail ) price, try L&C coin in California........I might even know a cointalker who can assemble a set or two :)

It's almost impossible to buy that sight-unseen IMO. As Jack said, the disparity in prices is crazy for Lincolns. Also, any damage or corrision really changes the price. I think someone would be better served taking the amount of money and doing it right.

Just out of curiosity I checked the PCGS Price Guide:

Complete Set (Date & Mint Mark)

    G4 - $1,734;
    F12 - $2,731

    Complete Set (with Major Varieties)
    G4 -$3,804

This set doesn't come with any DD's.

Well then read that PCGS [Over]PRICE[d] GUIDE, under "Complete Set (with Major Varieties)," and weep...what can Jack or I or anybody tell you? Res Ipsa Loquitur (the thing speaks for itself).

Yes. And correct me if i'm wrong, but the PCGS price guides are for slabbed coins? These are raw.

Yes, Harry, I believe you're right. So that, I guess we'll say, cinches it. ;)

Sounds like a great deal to me. Of course that set must include the 55 Double Die, 72 Double Die, 95 Double Die, all of the 1960 varieties, all of the different 70S large and small dates, and of coures all the 1982's in MS grades. OOPPs, not MS grades but as noted in Mint Uncirculated grades whatever that means.
Just what is so great about a Archival Album?
GEE, hope they have alot of those. Let me know who and I'll order myself about 10 of them.)
