I'm hoping someone can tell me what I have here. I found this in a junk bin today. I know it's Chinese and I know the dollar form of these is heavily faked, but this is more the size of a dime. Is this something good? I've never seen one before.
Looks like 1 jiao, year 3 (1914) Very nice find if authentic! Numista has it over $60 in VG. What's the weight and diameter?
Weight is 2.67g, diameter is 19 mm. I paid $16 for 1.6 pounds of cherrypicked coins so this would be a really nice ROI.
That's very close to perfect, so I'm guessing it really is 0.700 silver. I'm sure these are widely faked in China, like everything else. Though I'm not an expert at all, from the look of it my guess is that this one is authentic. Hope so!
You Americans are so lucky, having a population that mainly doesn't care about world coins means you get great world silver for next to nothing. In Australia every world coin is individually priced, we don't get any awesome "junk" finds.
This one wasn't even with the silver, it was with the base metal coins. Sometimes the smaller silver coins slip through, especially if they're dirty. You're right though. You have to find the right coin shop and sometimes the right clerk, but you can get some great deals if you know what you're doing.
