Last one yours is a beauty. I still think the first and yours should both be 66 and I’d grade the second a 65 and the final white one to 66
That date is hard, as it is often poorly struck. I do think Paul’s coin deserves the star for strong rainbow toning.
This was a fun thread. I was high 1 point on the first two. Nailed the third and was high 1 point on the 4th. Below are my take aways: First and most importantly the 4th coin which is your registry coin is clearly the most superior of the entire group from every aspect of grading. Strike, luster, eye appeal, and contact marks. Why it isn’t at least a 66 or 67 is beyond me. The color is also spectacular and I don’t even want to talk about it not having a star as it is more than worthy. Secondly I still have number 3 as my favorite excluding your registry coin and believe it’s grade also speaks to that being my decision. To me it’s the superior of the first 3. It also garnered the most votes in the poll although some believe it’s not worthy of a 67. I think it being blast white also helped it gain more votes as grading is already subjective enough adding a layer of toning which is also subjective made the white one a more comfortable decision for most. I would also like to point out the rare slab and W designation of coin 3 also adds a separate level of appeal to the coin although it doesn’t speak to points for a registry set builder. I think this coin is marketable to a larger crowd because it has more going for it. It’s also literally one quarter of a full step from being a 5-6 figure coin. I also think it’s great that 30% of people in the poll chose a $10 coin speaks that both eye appeal and grade can be had without breaking the bank.
I guess I have a lot to learn (or I've learned too much?). One of these is MS65 and the other is MS67. Huh. Price guide $25 versus $175. Interesting.
Sometimes, when you post, I think we are the same person. It is scary how much we think alike. For the record, I bought this coin in a PCGS MS65 FS holder and crossed it to NGC. My goals in the crossover were to get an upgrade to MS66, get the star designation, and keep full steps. I was absolutely furious when I saw that the coin crossed at MS65 FS with no star. If this coin doesn’t deserve a star, then no coin deserves a star. The third coin may have trouble getting separation in photos on a coin forum, but in hand, it is far superior to coins 1 & 2. Despite the weakness under the 2nd pillar, it still has one of the best strikes I’ve ever seen on a 52-D and the luster gives it a bold appearance in hand. Regarding coin #1, it has muted luster and it surprised me how many people chose that as their coin. I honestly expected it to get only 1 or 2 votes from the technical graders of the forum.
It's also disappointing that coin 2 is crooked in the holder. That would bug the heck out of me. I'd have it reholdered.
I was thinking #1, #3, #2 in that order, hard to believe the first one graded lower than #2, but Ok the luster is a bit weak compared to the others. Yours, The toning is really nice, the strike is good, well above average really, but it has a similar mintmark to example #2 (same die pair possibly? Same Press?) and yours has that big contact mark on Jeffersons face and some other minor ones which I think is why it gets a 65. No damn idea why they didn't give it a * though.... it absolutely deserves a *. perhaps its a candidate for a green or gold CAC bean though...... I think the contact mark on his cheek is a limiter, but I could see your jefferson getting graded as a MS66 5FS with a star really. I wonder what would happen if just cracked out and sent in, instead of a cross over, and no starting point for them to go by.... I think they might have started Biased at 65, and held it there with the contact marks that they might have graded less harshly.... Not sure.
My personal preference is #2, just because I love rainbow toners. Not gonna make a guess on the grade(s).
