Your evaluation of this coin is spot on, and it is higher graded than my registry coin but my registry coin has two things this coin doesn't have, rainbow toning & full steps. Reveal of grades coming soon guys!
Well you already revealed that the registry coin is FS. You also said my evaluation on coin 3 was spot on so if coin 3 is in fact a 67 than I have enough evidence to make a more educated guess. 66* 5FS
I am hoping that the photo is hiding the true story of the steps. That contact mark appears to have broken the steps under the 3rd pillar. MS66 still a no brainer. Definitely the best of the four.
Both TPGs graded the coin full steps, I bought it in PCGS plastic and crossed it to NGC plastic trying to get an upgrade and a star.
I think that one is MS66* FS. I think it is VERY close to not being FS between the middle pillars but it is FS. I think the ding on the jaw limits it to 66.
That one is better than the original three. I'll guess MS 66+ 5fs ...no star though...they are hard to get on nickels
I do think they are full. I don’t demand perfection with steps and can over look some weakness in spots or even shallow marks as seen here, I just can’t abide a major flaw that breaks continuity whether it be a mark, bridge, or gap caused by strike weakness. As with most things in this hobby, it is a matter of degree.
Reveal: Coin #1: Well struck Toner--NGC MS65 $10 Coin #2: Rainbow Toner--PCGS MS66 $40 Coin #3: Blast White--NGC MS67 W $125 Coin #4: Registry Coin--PCGS & NGC MS65 5FS--Hey NGC how did this not get a * Anyone want to change their mind after seeing the assigned grades or seeing how the coins look in a slab photo?
If it was me I would have given it a star, but as @ddddd said they are very stingy with giving nickels a star.
Coin 1: I called it a 66, but I'm ok with a 65. If the luster is as weak as both sets of images indicate, 65 is tops. Coin 2: Called it a 66, nailed it. Coin 3: Called it a 65. With new images, I can see 66 - but 67 is overgraded. Coin 4: Yup, that's the one I'd expect for your set. I actually agree with the grade, for once!
Coin 4 is gorgeous. Who cares about the grade, when it has incredible toning like that? I would get it green beaned.
I should add: compared to the other 3, your registry coin clearly has superior eye appeal. However, in the grand scheme of things, I really don't think it's Star worthy.
In the grand scheme of things, it is more than star worthy. I have seen lesser Jeffersons get stars for toning.
