If you bought it PCGS will take it back. They guarantee their coins, though I don't know the exact policies about his. Look up on their website about coin guarantees. I know RLM and AJ know about this.
Are you talking about the spotting on the obverse or the toning in it's entirety. There is no possible way this coin wasn't toned before it was slabbed. With regards to the spotting on the obverse, I guess only the submitter/owner of the coin would know that. If you are not that person, you should forget about this coin since there is no way you are going to buy it right!
The black spotting may have been caused by someone sneezing on the coin a very long time before it was slabbed. I can't believe PCGS would slab a coin that looked like that, so I think they will cover it under their guarantee. Send it in for a spot review. That coin looks like maybe a couple of hundred bucks, so I think it's worth it.
I'm amazed the coin was even slabbed to begin with. The coin is pitted, the toning was allowed to progress to the point where it corroded the coin. Then it was dipped - what you see is what remains after the dip. And yes it was all there before it was slabbed - pits and all. I wouldn't buy that coin on a bet.
Given the less-than-desirable toning pattern, I'm not 100% sure the coin was toned before it was slabbed. It probably was, but not certainly so. I'm thinking the slab may have been gassed in an attempt to create toning. This would have also rapidly brought out the black spots.
.......if it was pitted, i don't believe ngc or pcgs would slab it. if it is one of these tpg's i'd contact them as per the guarantee and see what options are offered to you. steve
That is why I asked my question to begin with. First, PCGS WILL grade it - genuine. Secondly, there are lots of other TPG's who will grade it and more than one have slabs at least similar to the OP's.
It's in a PCGS slab graded au50. I don't own the coin nor would i buy it, unless it was really, really cheap. All of the black on the upper lip makes it look like a mustache
WOW!!!! It looks like the coin is currently over pcgs book. I guess the black spots are desirable toning to teletrade bidders.:goofer: Current bid with buyers fee is 276. http://teletrade.com/coins/lot.asp?auction=2650&lot=1766
That coin sucks. I really hope no CT member is bidding on that POS. I will stick with my XF 1909 Barber Quarter.
