How do you store your coins?

What kind of storage do you use for your common circulated coins? Right now I am using the hard tubes for common items that don't really need or deserve more expenditure.

I would also like to ask, what types of books or storage do you use for your better coins? What is your favorite "book" type and what is your favorite "other" type of storage?

I have also heard folks recommend Tupperware. Now do I have to go to a Tupperware party to get that? I sure hope not - maybe just look for a dealer around my area. Also wondering if other plastic "Tupperware-TYPE", but not "brand" containers would work just as well.

    PS

PS - I am wondering, not only, about "types of storage", but also "brand names" and links/URL's if you have any. Thanks again for your time and help.

All i use is three ring binders and cardboard/mylar(sp?) 2x2's.

Well 3-Ring binders sound like a good idea, because you can add and delete pages as needed. Do the pages inserted hold the 2 x 2's? and do you know where I can get them? Do the pages have cardboard - or?

the sheets i put in the binder are just pvc free plastic sheets that holds 20 2x2's per page. I buy them at my Local coin shop but i'm sure you can find some on e-bay if you don't have a local shop. The 2x2's are just cardboard with a mylar window. you fold it in half and staple it shut.

I mostly use the 2x2's in 3 ring binder pages. It is appropriate for inexpensive and/or well circulated coins. For higher dollar or grade stuff, a more airtight and safe storage would be better.

If you go the 2x2/binder route, make sure to use archival qulaity (PVC free) pages and 2x2's.

Remember to clean or blow all of the paper dust off the 2x2's before putting the coins in them. The dust can cause spotting or damage.

Also, remember to flatten the staples with pliers to avoid scratches (or use a flat clinch stapler which flattens them while you staple).

Periodic checking of the coins is a good idea too in order to make sure that the environment is not adversly affecting your coins...and to enjoy the coins, of course :)

would that be AT because you know there being toned but doing nothing to them :?:

mbbiker: Only if flacoins is storing those albums in an oven at 300 degrees.! :D

To me artificial toning is really rapid toning...something that is done to the coin (chemical, heat, etc) that tones it very, very quickly or pretty much instantaneously. If you store a coin in something that can tone it over a long period of time, that is not AT.

US made 2x2's I've seen are not that good... I use and sell European holders wich are more delicate, don't have dust or PVC and are relatively cheap....

    Have fun collecting!!

Why and are the European holders better. I can imagine that postage to US would really make price go up. How is price in comparison. I am thinking that for commons, as long as holder is PVC-free, that it's not that big of deal. I DO like the 3 ring binder idea. I think I may go with that. I like the idea of adding pages as needed.

Thanks all for your ideas and tips!

I came late to this party, so forgive me for trying to reply to a bunch of stuff all at once...

I store my less expensive/more common stuff in 2x2s in a box meant to hold them...I find this an easy way to keep track of what I got. Some coins are in Dansco albums, and a few coins are in Intercept Shield 2x2s. My small collection of slabbed coins are in a slab box, which also holds all my extra supplies (flips, 2x2s). I have yet to come up with a solution I am really happy with for proof/mint sets, and other Mint products that come in boxes which I would prefer not to completely mangle (that is, if the mint didn't already beat me to it). I always use a can of compressed air to get rid of dust, cat hair, whatever before inserting coins into 2x2s or albums.

Stujoe: You know how I feel about my flat-clinch stapler! :D

Coinman: I've seen those 2x2s you're talking about (around coins I bought from you), and it can be really hard to get the coins out of those suckers! That glue is really tough to separate! I really thought that one of those times I was going to get glue on the coin. Now I just leave them alone. Anyone know if the glue on the self-adhesive 2x2s is damaging? It seems like it should be.

Chrysta, the self sealing holders have glue up to a few milimmeters far from the inner circle edge. Unless the coin is bigger that what the holder is made to hold, then there is practicly no way glue can contact the coin!

    Have fun collecting!

Yes, I have heard that the glue CAN damage the coins -- and have seen first hand that staples can too - if they get damp, they rust - and the rust can spread to the coin. It seems there is just no foolproof way. What I have tried is using little labels on the 2 x 2's to hold them shut on the outside - no glue, no staples.

Any tips, ideas for labeling coins?

Chrysta, those self-sealing 2x2's are supposed to stay closed so the harder they are to open, the best they are! If anyone wants to test the 2x2's I use, I can send over samples anytime at a very low cost.
1 od each size of the 10 available in self sealing and stappler type plus postage will only cost 2.50 Euro... PayPal accepted! Just email me and I will have a sampler send to you!

Are you certain that the pocket pages are PVC free. Many suppliers will tell you they are, when they aren't. Most of the pvc-free pages are 120 micron polypropylene and are extremely flimsy, not stiff like a regular vinyl pocket page.

My circulated coins are also in 2X2 holders. I just make sure I keep all my coins in a cool dry place.

Andrew, do you sell PVC free pages? I am getting a proliferation of world coins in my collection, and was thinking of moving them to binders so that I can actually look at them once in a while :) but I don't want to take chances, even though the vast majority are and probably always will be under $5 in value! I'm about to make another order from you soon anyway, so I figured maybe I can pick some binder pages up too. What do you recommend?
