From Aureo&Calico Auction AV Tremissis ND Barbi Mint Suintila 621-31AD Waiting for "Bing's" comment....
Yep, I can remember when those were routinely listed at less than $200 US, and, of course, nobody I knew had any $200 US.
Nice score John ! This one looks FDC. Did the Visigoths mint any gold coins larger than this denomination ?
I know. Just look at the Farouk sale in 1954 I have the book on the Visigoth coinage. They ONLY struck AV Tremissis/ no copper/silver/ just the one gold denomination. So, I guess they had some trouble for small purchases. It would be like in 2020, we only had $500 bills in our wallet/ my case pocket. Seems they had hundreds of mints striking only the AV Tremissis. Today with inflation, we could sure use some $500 bills today.
...As good as your Kool-Aid Smiley Face, @Bing. And no, @panzerman, this example is as good as Most of the ones I ever saw, except for the strike on the outer borders. And as such, they were the fish that got away; consider the source.
I saw the actual catalogue/ prices realized/ makes you want to go back in time, to that auction with today's cash in hand I have even noted how auction prices have escalated in past TEN years, never mind to 70s. I guess the demand for classic coinage far exceeds the supply which is finite.
Congrats, that is a great coin p-man! You mine a lot of auctions to find your gold. I think of another Barbie B....
