hi,i am a newbie and i was wondering if someone could tell me something about this coin.i put it on another coin site and they told me it was damaged by candy.it has a big sink hole or indentation with the 1 and 9 of the date stamped in the hole.i dont see how anything stuck to a coin could possibily pull than much of the coin out besides wouldn`t than remove the date if it were possible.please tell me what you think.the back of thecoin is normal p.jpg

I'm still a novice on here but my assumption would that depending on that type of candy. Such as possibly a lemon or something with a high citric acid it may be possible. If I were you I would wait for one of the pros on here to give you a more firm answer though. Welcome and good luck.

That looks like some kind of substance on the coin possibly elmers glue or candy ot something to that nature a big blob of nothing/ :eating:

it's the front of the coin the obverse not the reverse

It's a struck through error. Something gets on the die during the minting process.

Struck through error Occurs when a foreign object lies on top of the planchet and leaves an impression of itself when struck into the coin. A wide variety of objects have been reported including grease, string, cloth, hair, plastic, bandaid, staples, etc.

All Struck Through coins have value on ebay LOL, and most do in real life. I just got a quarter back from Mike Diamond that I had sent to him to check and it has a rolled in wire and is valued at around $70.
Not bad for a 25 cent investment.

I DID EXAMINE THIS COIN, I INDICATED IN RED IT LOOKS LIKE A BUBBLE FROM THE GLUE OR WHATEVER SUBSTANCE AND IT MAY ALSO BE A SMALL WASHER THAT WAS PLACED ON TOP OF THE GLUE TO MAKE IT LOOK GOOD AND SETTLEING INTO THE GLUE tHAT DOES NOT LOOK LIKE A FOREIGN OBJECT USUALLY YOU CAN DISDINGUSH WHAT THE OBJEST IS ,AND THIS DOESN;T LOOK LIKE ANY KNOWN OBJECT I HAVE SEEN WIRE, CLOTH ,STAPLE ,ETC ETC ETC . WHAT DO YOU THINK THE OBJECT IS? MAYBE IT;S CAKED UP GREASE , AND THAT MAY BE IT ,SOMETIMES THAT HAPPENS AT THE MINT ,AND GIVES SOMEWHAT OF THAT APPEARNCE ON THE SURFACE OF THE COIN,AND WOULD BE CALLED A STRUCK THRU BUT NOT SURE.

NOTICE THE COLOR OF THE COIN A PINKISH COLOR THE INDIVIDUAL THAT DID THIS WAS TRYING TO BLEND IN THE SUBSTACE WITH THE COIN.MAYBE

THIS DOES'NT APPEAR TO BE A STRIKE THRU ERROR TO ME BUT I'M NOT SURE JUST MY OPINION
HERE'S SOME STRUCK THRU ERRORS WHAT DO YOU THINK THEY ARE? THE THIRD PIC DOWN IS THE OP'S COIN
PS MAYBE LINCOLN HAD A BAD STOMACH VIRUS , AND VOMITED ,BECAUSE IT;S PERFECTLY LINED UP WITH HIS MOUTH .

If it is down into the coin as the OP states then it would be a strike through. It looks like it was prob just a little thin hunk of scrap metal. It looks pretty typical for a strike through. I think the picture may be playing tricks on peoples eyes tho.

I like the "candy damage" story tho.... that's a pretty good one and I have never heard of it before...

I have heard from a very reputable source that in a private error collection there is a foreign coin (I cant remember the county it has been a while since I was told about it) that is struck through a human finger. YOUCH!! Don't know if it is true or not... but judging by who told me this id tend to believe it... Yikes!!

IMHO, it appears to be a Lamination (peel) flaw (de-lamination error) where the piece has separated from the coin! However, it is possible that some type of acid could have eaten into the area as well but if that was the case, then I would expect the area to be much more widespread and ragged.

If it was raised... it would be glue... but the OP states its down into the coin. I think the pic is just playing tricks on your eyes.

I think you better open your eyes that;s clear as day a glue job. The only possible explaination would be grease that caked up on the surface of the coin and that will be called a strick thru error, but we don;t know for sure unless the trickster posts another pic.

That looks like a raised object to me on the surface of the coin you don;t have to have exray vision to notice that do you?

The OP states that it is down into the coin... INTO the coin... not on top of the coin... last time I checked glue doesn't sink down into a coin... it rests on top of it... if and only if it is down into the coin as the person with the coin in their hand says... there is no possible way it could be glue...

    :desk:

Jazzy jim joebob half alien FUD you are wrong again... get some more books, study some more coins... this misinformation has to stop.
