Which new coin this year (2009) do you think is the best investment?

So taxes are coming back and I have to make a choice soon on what I am going to buy. Now as far as my wants go, I do want a 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coin, and yes I am getting enough back to buy one. But I am worried it will not raise in value like my previous silver collections. I am wondering if my best bet is to buy the the American Eagle Proof coins when they come out. What would you buy with $1,000 U.S. if you wanted the highest return?

If this goes out of the scope of this forum please let me know. I did not see any other post that talked about coins from a pure investment point, and assume this topic does fall under the wants category in the rules post.

    Man, heck of a username!

Well, our government has given out 180 billion dollars in stimulus checks. 25 billion to the automakers. 750 billion to the banks which has mostly disappeared. And after watching the news tonight, it looks like by the end of the weekend they'll be handing out another 800+ billion. That's almost 2 trillion in spending in less than a year and they haven't even glanced at the normal operating budget yet. Government run health care is next in line. Iraq and Afghanistan probably aren't getting any cheaper yet either. A billion or two a month?

Probably not the response you were looking for but IMO, anything with a precious metal in it (or maybe even just metal) should be a good investment right now! Hyperinflation, coming our way.

Aside from that, one candidate to look at that we talked about in another thread yesterday, are the special Lincoln silver dollar commemorative with the 4 new pennies, proof sets that the mint will put out this spring. The complete sets will be limited to 50k. (Keep in mind the Lincoln silver dollars are supposed to have a total mintage of 500k).
I think many here will be buying several of these sets, including me. It's hard to see them going down in value as popular as Lincoln has become.

You would think there would be many thousands of hard core Lincoln cent collectors in the world who would each want at least one set by themselves. Dealers will be buying in bulk and hoarding as well.

I am a big supporter of silver, I think historically silver is way undervalued, and I have been told by one of my coin dealers, that the U.S. mint has not bought any silver reserves in a while, so they don't have a lot of it. Haven't found a way to prove that though. Is it me or is there really no scheduled date for a release of the 2009 Silver Eagle Proofs?

Welcome to the forum! The thing about buying modern mint new releases, is that those who would pay more for it in the near future, probably are planning on buying extras also. Only if problems prevents the full production might the value increase dramatically.

Why not buy something you are fairly sure will not increase in quantity such as a mid range PCGS 1914-D Lincoln or a PCGS/NCG 1912 Matte Lincoln Proof. Or something similar in your collecting area. If you want precious metal, how about a graded $10 Indian gold. JMHO.

Thank you for your welcome desertgem.
I suppose my idea of coin investing is a bit different from others. I prefer to buy the new coins that come out every year, and tend to sell the non- gainers within 2-3 years of getting them. Although I do seem to keep ones that although have not gained, but are worth a nice chunk, like the 1999 silver quarter set among the few. Now I have only been collecting for 4 years, so I can always use some advice at this point.

First, welcome. Second, buy something you'll enjoy owning, because there is no guarantee you'll make money on any of it.

If you dig silver like me, I always pick up a roll of ASE $1 when they come out. And a couple of proofs and burnished coins to go with them. Never know when a 2008-07 reverse will happen again. And the numismatic value is above spot so hopefully they will continue to appreciate. That will still leave room for a couple Lincoln sets.

Buy $1000 in books. Thats the only investment sure to appreciate. Silver is nice if you have 50 years to sit on it. Gold is great if you like to buy high and have lots of hope. You said you don't buy older stuff, so thats out of the question I guess.

    Can you make a suggestion?
And yes, I do have 50 years to sit on it.

Sure won't argue with that. And they'll probably appreciate more in the same time period than any coins you can buy.

try the 2009 clad proof set, silver proof set, and mint uncirculated set. this year have only once in a lifetime to own 4 pc of different design lincoln cent and 6 pc of territorial quarters. and also the first series of sacagawea of native flavor.

there are 18 pc per set for clad and silver proof set. 36 pc for mint unc set. i don't know how much the mint going to charge us.

It is hard to tell what the smart buys will be. Could be anything. The Spouse coins are hanging at low mintages.

the spouses gold together with prez dollars will keep going lower and lower. better not to buy at this time. to buy spouses gold. try 2008 w am. eagle unc gold then.

I'm going for 12 Lincoln unc and 12 Lincoln proofs next week.

I doubt the lincoln dollar/cent package will come out until later in the year but when that does, I'm going for 10-20 of those.

    Let the races begin.

Welcome to the forum and I would second the sets, with a enfranchise on silver.

None of them. Coins are a terrible investment. Anyone who says otherwise, please post your results.

Bottom Line: Buy coins because you like them, not because you intend on making money on them.

I tend to agree with that generally. Still though I have picked up a few things from the mint in recent years that popped up. The 2008 clad proof set for example. Much better than Lehman Bros stock.
