I pulled a large lot of Buffalo Nickels off Ebay and they arrived yesterday. At first glance, I thought this low grade 1923-S was damaged, but upon closer inspection it appears to be a lamination: A large chunk of planchet is missing on the Indian's cheek, stretching from his braids to the corner of his nose. The "veiny" appearance underneath is similar to lamination I've seen on other Buffalo nickels. At any rate, I thought it was pretty neat and have dubbed it a "War Paint" lamination.
