I pulled a large lot of Buffalo Nickels off Ebay and they arrived yesterday. At first glance, I thought this low grade 1923-S was damaged, but upon closer inspection it appears to be a lamination:

A large chunk of planchet is missing on the Indian's cheek, stretching from his braids to the corner of his nose. The "veiny" appearance underneath is similar to lamination I've seen on other Buffalo nickels.

At any rate, I thought it was pretty neat and have dubbed it a "War Paint" lamination.

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

The raised disturbed metal around the gouge would tend to indicate that this is post-mint damage.

Looks like a detached lamination to me.

That would make a good pairing with my "Bearded Indian"

I’m seeing reflections of light off the abrupt end of the metal. No movement
