I rarely start any threads on this forum and I'm not religious but I thought it would be interesting to see what people would include on the " 10 Commandments of Coin Collecting " just in case there is a coin heaven and if we all meet there some day. Here's a few of my thoughts. Add yours.

    1. Thou shalt never ( almost never ) clean coins.
    2. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbors coin collection.
    3. Thou shalt not purchase coins from SGS.

By the way ... I've already broken two of my commandments !! :crying:

I only have 4 commandments, as reminded by a friend not long ago -

1)Buy the very best quality coins you can . It's better to buy a great coin at a fair price than a fair coin at a great price.

2)Buy for the long term...with the idea of holding forever.

3)Patience is critical. Wait for the perfect pitch, right down the middle of the plate.

4)When the opportunity presents itself, act quickly and seize the day

    1. Hardly ever clean coins unless you want to.
    2. Keep coins in a safe place
    3. Do not put your coins in a refrigerator
    4. Do not tell everyone you know about your coins
    5. Do not tell people where you keep your coins. If you do #4, then ignore #5
    6. Do buy what you want, when you want, regardless of grade or others comments about your coins
    7. Ask people a lot of questions about coins, read as much as you can about coins and then do what you want regardless of all that.
    8. Go to coin shows, coin stores, coin clubs.
    9. Attempt to find a dealer that you can trust. Make sure he was not a used car salesperson in another life.
    10. Get a list of all the members of this forum and send them a coin.
    11. Stop reading all this stuff and go work on your coin collection
    12. Never tell your wife, husband if your a wife, how much you spend on coins
    13. Do not tell people to use the Red Book for prices of coins.
    14. Tell everyone you know to join this forum.
    15. Re read #11

    Awesome ....lol.

Thou shalt not speak ill of coin dealers on a forum where dealers far out number collectors.

LOL, I think there are many more newbies and collectors than dealers tho.

    I'll add a rule:

It hurts more to sell an average coin than it to buy one;)

    1) Enjoy the hobby
    2) Spread your love for the hobby
    3) buy quality
    4) never trade coins for anything but coins (except that one time for the wedding ring)
    5) when trading coins never trade a rare coin worth the same as a common date in great condition, one of these days you'll regret it.

This topic has been buggin' me since lastnight when I read it. I'm not upset about it, I am just torn between what probably should be done with what I may want to do. I understand the fact that this is just opinions and respectfully everyone will still do what they want to. ALTHOUGH it does make more sense to get the best you can afford and plan to keep it forever. For me for instance though that means I could buy one proof or one MS something every couple months, or once a year if I were lucky. When in fact I like to just own all different kinds of things even if they are circulated or considered by most people to be junk. Here comes the "torn" part.... 40 years from now I'm gonna have a box full of variety cents, wartime nickels, some peace dollars, a morgan or two, some p/d state quarters and who knows what else will strike my interest but most likely a big box of "junk" (in albums ). Don't get me wrong, I would love to hand these down to my kids or grandkids and see them either enjoy them and continue collecting or sell them and have something more to show for it than...it's a circulated "steaming pile" :p. A few of the things I have are nice and I will probably score a few nice things along the way but the attraction to coin collecting is constantly finding "something" and calling it mine! (Speaking for myself) Hmm...start now with one or two really nice things that I can get out and admire once a week until more money comes my way or try to complete sets regardless of condition??

Ahh well, have to figure this one out on my own I suppose, but also wanted to see if anyone else may feel the same way?
