Welcome aboard the CT Train. Hope you enjoy the ride.
Your coin has probably been zinc plated, but still worth $.01.

    Plated/rubbed with mercury. potato/potatoe IMO :)
My dad used to tell me how they would play with mercury in science class in the 60s. Crazy.

It has a very faint goldish tone to it.

Well, my grandparents were avid collectors, starting in the 40's, and they had this one stuck in one of those tri fold books. Hmmmm.

No hmmm about it. It's not an error or anything. Just a coin that was messed with after it left the mint. I've pulled a handful of plated/otherwise altered cents in my almost 750 boxes of cents searched. Sometimes they escape into the wild.

Some coins were plated gold, the minuscule thickness wore off easily.
I wonder if all people behaved in the manner of your Grandparents.

uh...that hasn't happened in quite a while. The experiment is to deposit a thin coating of zinc. After that you can burnish it up for a "silver penny" or heat it up on a hotplate to alloy the zinc and some of the copper to make brass for a "gold penny".

I'll keep looking and posting. I'm overwhelmed in coins here, and there has to be something good.
