Over the last few years I have been selling a number the coins that I feel no longer serve any purpose and should be given a new home. Normally I would put together a group and simply post them in the mail. However thee last group I had to send using Fed Ex and thus a value had to be placed on them. Okay so for the first time I had to look up and try to come to some meaningful conclusion as to how much the coin was worth. My methodology was relatively simple as the coins were being shipped to CNG I came to a notion of value based on the results of similar coins in their E Auctions or more rarely their Feature Auctions. A little over a week ago CNG Auction 480 ended and I got my results. In seven cases I received substantially more than I thought I would but on the other hand in six cases I received substantially less. Three coins 14,21 and 28 I thought should do better but I had very little information to work with. I knew that 11 was rare but I really had no idea what it would bring. I thought I was being optimistic at 200. No 22 did not take a good picture and suffered as a result. I thought 19 might actually fare rather more poorly than it did. Six coins out of the 28 did about what I had expected and another 4 did either somewhat better or worse than anticipated. Over all I am very pleased with the result. True I would have liked to get more for some of the coins did not do as well as I thought they should but many did much better than I thought they might. Again I cannot stress this point enough. Auctions are a bit of a crap shoot. It is best to have an overall Idea of what the coins should make as a group and be happy if they do.
Very interesting Terence. Thanks for sharing this. After my recent consignment to CNG I created a similar list. In my case every coin with one exception did much better than anticipated. I think that some coins are very popular and these seem to bring multiples of the estimates.
I do not collect at a level that would involve CNG in any way - but I certainly appreciate your free sharing of information. Unfettered sharing of this kind can only help collectors. Thank you!
Interesting indeed. Having a paid subscription to ACsearch I’m finding my predictions are usually in the right ballpark these days. Auctions being auctions though anything can happen, and sometimes I’m completely out to lunch.. Fwiw I pay zero attention to house estimates. Sometimes the house estimate is demonstrably way too low, and on another coin in the same auction the estimate is bang on expected sale price. You can usually pick out what is what.
Thanks for posting this. What are the seller's fees for CNG? I might consider culling my collection...
