1998 D Red Nickel

    Can someone tell me about what they think is the reason this coin is red. Through microscope you see blotches of black also.

    Yup, acids and other chemicals in the dirt will then coins all sorts of wonky colors

    Nickels are made of Cupro-Nickel.
    75% Copper and 25% Nickel.
    When exposed to a harsh environment for a long period of time the Copper is affected and tones a darker color. Soil, dirt, sand, water and chemicals will do this..
    Here are my metal detected examples.

    Same goes for clad coins. Also Cupro-Nickel.
