I found a 1901 Indian Head yesterday in the neighbor's yard. I have detected that yard numerous times so it
was a surprise. Great condition too.

 

Three heads are better than one.

 

The Byzantines used letters for numbers like the Romans, but differently. A (alpha) = 1, Beta = 2, etc. but when they got to 6, for some reason they used a combination of the letters sigma and tau. This character was called "stigma" and is where our same English word comes from. (Zeta = 7, eta = 8...) There was also a special symbol for 90. Omega = 800. 900 used another non-alphabetical symbol. For 1000, 2000, etc they put a comma before the letter like this: ,α ,β ,γ and so on. This system is still in use today, mostly in Greek Orthodox liturgical service books.

Two pocket pieces i carry around for good luck. The Peace dollar was a pickup at a bank a decade ago; i figure it might have been a WWII veteran's challenge piece. the Ike i found back in the mid-80's. It probably had seen lots of use in casinos. It ended up winning me a incredible apartment in college, when a coin toss was needed to determine where we would pick.(helps to know it's worn enough that tails will land upright more often than not!)

This coin was my start on CT. I was perusing the net looking for info on this new buffalo to add to my herd and came across this forum. My, how 14+ years go by.

Thanks for the great giveaway as always! I just got a bottle of Nic-A-Date and I tried it out on a few Buffalo Nickels. I found a 1913 raised ground and what I think is a 1914 P as well, both for my nickel album. (It’s really hard to take pictures of these especially with the acid on it.)
