This coin obviously has an old cleaning, but I know TPGs are forgiving of old cleanings on silver coins. Do you guys think it would straight grade (even though I would not submit it)? I'm interested in it primarily for the die cracks on both sides. When I teach the merit badge for scouts I discuss die cracks and show them some photos on a power point, but I don't have any in my collection for them to handle.
Whelp...the link apparently didn't make it into the thread. Here it is: https://www.ebay.com/itm/1838-CAP-BUST-HALF-DOLLAR/133568049215
I like the reverse die crack. This is a tough one. I'm not an expert, but my "guess" is that it would get either "VF25" or "VF Details". Those are some pretty harsh scratches on the obverse.
No, IMO, it wouldn't straight grade...If the cleaning didn't get it detailed, then the light graffiti would. Still worth its current bid, though
Just as well, it looks scrubbed with some pretty bad scratches. These are common enough that you should be able to find an unmolested example without too much trouble, if that's what you are looking for.
The snark on this forum is what makes me a rare visitor despite more than 35 years of collecting. As a lifelong nerd, I've never seen a group of nerds be more self-inflated than on this very forum. I even had an article published by the ANA wherein I called out this place for that very behavior (although I didn't mention the name of the site, this is the one I was referring to).
I wish I could do better, but this isn't a series I know well. However, $55 (shipping included) seemed like a fair price. ...and I apologize for the snark.
