I'm glad the US Mint finally minted a new silver dollar coin. I like the American Silver Eagles, but I'm kind of getting tired of looking at them. The new 2009 Lincoln Silver Dollar looks pretty nice and it's only being released for one year, which should make it a very valuable coin. I'm sure the Mint will run out of them quickly considering the huge demand for coins right now. I have quite a few Silver Eagles and I'd like to add a few of these Lincolns to my collection. This is a link to the new - 2009 Lincoln Silver Dollar Coin. Is anyone on this board planning on getting some from the Mint?
Hey Poppa Bear, welcome to Coin Talk. I hope you stick around a bit. Sounds like you are hooked on silver dollars and there are many of us here that share in your enthusiasum. The us mint will continue to mint the Silver Eagle as they have done so since 1986. It will come in a proof, bullion and most likely an burnished UNC version this year. This series will most likely continue for many years to come and whose series termination date is no where in the immediate future. But the Lincoln silver dollar is a commemorative silver dollar and was only intended to be a one year issue. Typically, these silver dollars are determined many years in advance based on laws that the presidents signs. If fact, just recently President Bush before he left office signed into law to have a commemorative silver released in 2014 to commemorate the civil rights movement. Along with the Lincoln commemorative this year, the us mint is also releasing a commemorative honoring Louis Braille. Typically, the mint will release two new commemorative silver dollars each year with both UNC and proof versions being produced. If you are a big fan of silver dollars and like change... keep a look out in the next few years for the NASA series to be released. This series will contain 9 silver dollars for each planet (yes, Pluto will be honored) and a $50 gold coin. That will be a neat series. Good luck and hope to see you around. Joe
sounds awesome New member here with today's endevour. But the new lincoln silvers look great. Same with NAsa series. When will it be avail to be ordered? Gold is just a tad high for my liking, but silver is appearing great deal right now.
Thanks for welcoming me to the board jaceravone. It looks like the US Mint just published new prices for the new 2009 Lincoln Silver Dollar. The Mint said it's offering introductory discounts for several weeks following the commemorative silver dollar launch. I think these coins will be a very good investment. This is the only year they'll produce them. By the way, I also collect gold coins, platinum coins and palladium Swiss Pamp bars. I'd like to get my hands on some palladium coins, but it wasn't even easy to get the bars. I like Palladium because it's extremely undervalued compared to the other precious metals. Palladium is much more rare than gold and it seems to be off the investment communities radar.
I've never ordered something like this from the mint. Is this going to be another gold rush mentality thing on the first day? Or can I wait a few days and order when things calm down?
The Abraham Lincoln Commemorative Coin Act calls for up to 500,000 uncirculated and proof silver dollars for collectors this year, and four new Lincoln circulating cents to celebrate the bicentennial of Lincoln’s birth. I plan to buy the proof, unc and the set with the cents in it. Woohoo, can hardly wait! :hail:
I am going to buy the 2009 Lincoln Dollar. I wrote a post about this coin on my site. I would love for you to check it out.
Todd, one never knows what a coin is going to do until after it has been released for a while and supply & demand take effect. I do think there will be a huge demand this year for anything Lincoln. I want them due to it's the Lincoln 100 year anniversary for the cents plus the commemoratives are really nice. I was very disappointed with the Ben Franklin commem prices, they never went up in value much at all but at least I haven't lost anything. I believe that had a LOT to do with more supply than demand.
2009 silver ;ico;ns all: iPlan on buyong at least one each of the proof and the UNC. Would like to buy several of weach for future resale. I believe tht these will be like the Marine Corps Comm. and really increse in value.
Yes, it seems any time a commemorative comes out that there is a loyal following, demand drives the price sky high. An exception would be if they overproduce it like the '82 Washington, which many were eventually melted. These are worth little more than bullion today. I think when (or if) they produce a Martin Luther King commem with limited mintage, it will be an excellent one to purchase as an investment.
Investment? Nahh. They will be cool collector items but investment is not the best term for a collector to use. Just about every year they make a commemorative silver dollar or two. Look at some of their prices. The lewis and clark commemorative was only made 1 year and was silver but they are only worth like 32 bucks or something.
I use the term investment also. It's no term a collector should use, but I'm trying to quit. My coins take offense to it anyway.:goofer:
They've been authorized to mint so many of these coins I don't think you'll have to worry about availability. Now, the gold rush mentality? That's another thing. I find when I order commemoratives from the mint on the first day of offering it's generally a zoo for the first half hour or so....nothing loads, computer runs slow, bang the keyboard and curse. Chill out and come back latter, these coins ain't goin' nowhere.
Probably never. After two years of trying to get it passed it still hasn't been authorized and now that a new Congress has begun it has to go back to the drawing board and start over from scratch. Add to that the fact there can only be two commem programs a year, and most of the slots through 2014 have been filled already means that the next opening is 2015 for a commem to celebrate an anniversary that was last year. Have the Marine Corps coins really done that much? I've neve thought they did much in the aftermarket. They will be available easily in the aftermarket, but I do expect a fast sellout from the mint. It is a very popular subject and the total authorized mintge for Unc and Proof combined is 500,000. I don't think it will set a record but I don't think it will be available for much longer than the buffalo dollar was (18 days) The 50,000 special sets on the other hand MAY set a record for a silver dollar set. (Current record is the buffalo coin and currency set, 4 days)
I'm sure you can wait to buy this coin. I don't like to follow the herd myself. The only thing that's different about buying a commemorative coin now than from buying them in the past is that the demand for ordinary bullion coins is huge. I'll wait till things calm down and then check with my dealer.
Sellout For Sure! Buy 'em while you can... I have exactly ZERO commemoratives in my collection-I've never been drawn to them. THIS coin I am drawn to, for a variety of reasons: First of all, I think the design is absolutely stunning! Lincoln looks great (and distinct from the penny portrait we've had for the past hundred years). And the words on the reverse still ring appropriately in today's tough world environment. I think those words are powerful enough that they actually "work" on this commemorative. I predict this coin will offer a huge return on investment to anyone who decides to hoard a few (Yes, I will be among them!). As a collector, I've never "speculated" and purchased multiples of a particular issue in hopes of its value going up. But I'm telling you, this one will! Here's my reasoning: 1. We just welcomed our nation's first black President, and he's a Senator from Illinois ("Land of Lincoln"). He was sworn in on the Lincoln Bible (only president to be sworn in on it besides the man himself). Lincoln is considered to be the champion of emancipation. 2. We are celebrating the 200 year anniversary of Lincoln's birth. And the 100 year anniversary of the Lincoln Penny (and 4 new reverse designs to collect!) 3. 500,000 total. Yes, other commems don't always sell out. But the popularity of Lincoln, combined with the above items, sounds to me like we are in the "perfect storm," if you will, of opportunity. Factor in the 50,000 issue Proof set with the four pennies, and that's another hot item I'll bet goes up in value quickly. Once the general public catches on to these items, I'm predicting there will be a frenzy, which will drive prices up. I'm certain some enterprising folks will come up with an expensive Lincoln-Obama coin set (did you guys see those awful Obama "dollars" with a color sticker over a Presidential Dollar people have been hawking? UGGGHHH) to sell. A friend and I have an over/under wager on the sellout of the Lincoln Dollar. We set the bar at 4 months (I took the under, boldly stating to him "waay under"). I read today there is a limit of 100 coins of each type (proof & unc) per household. While I'm not THAT big of a speculator, I'm certainly going to grab a few extras. My recommendation to anyone who might invest is to consider the uncirculated ones (they will almost certainly be the lower mintage, and therefore more desirable later on). So, while I have no way to "guarantee" my speculation is correct, I will say I personally will be standing in the digital line at noon on the 12th to place my order. I'm betting a few others of you will as well. Good luck!
