Hello everyone, as you can see I am brand spanking new here . I have gotten into coin collecting with my girls during this pandemic and can across a 2000 Kennedy half dollar and it seems to have dash marks between the letters and date and was wandering if it may be an error coin. Thank you for time and input.

sounds to me like your coin probably was damaged by the reeded edge of another coin but photos will help us give a definitive answer for you.

Welcome to CT. Sounds like it took a hit as described by Evan but we need photos to support that. Welcome to CT.

Those marks appear to be from a rather aggressive coin roll crimping machine. The machine scraped up the coin. Not an error. You will come across many more coins like this of all demoninations.

That is damage caused by a coin rolling machine.

No problem. I am glad I could help. Me and my mother put together the 50 states set before in finished in circa 2006 and I believe it cemented my path as a collector. I hope you make fond memories with your daughters.

Will do . I actually went to one of my local casinos and they sold me $800 bag of assorted dollars and my bank sold me $640 of rolled half’s so I’ll be busy for awhile and just received my loop to check them lol.

Welcome to CT Brian. It sounds like a great hobby for the girls to get into with you. How old are your girls? Lots of history lessons as well as art lessons in coins, so educational for them as well as you.
Please post photos of what you find and might have questions about.

Just as a side note, I'm sort of fussy about giving information about a coin or currency from photos, so advise members to do the following.

You should always post in focus FULL IMAGE photos (after you upload your photo, two buttons appear: Thumbnail and Full Image, click Full Image and your photo appears full size on your post and is easily enlarged by clicking on it). Photograph coins on neutral backgrounds like black, grey, or white. Crop out superfluous background so just the coin shows, and post photos with correct orientation so members don't have to turn their computer in some awkward fashion to view it properly. While it isn’t always necessary, it is nice to show both the obverse and reverse, even if your question is just about one side. Members can often give more valuable information having both sides to evaluate. Add close ups of areas you have questions about and make your questions as definitive as possible so we know what you are asking for. And try to have the best lighting possible to show the most favorable photo of the coin. Hope this helps in the future. Good luck.

Also, you may wish to invest in an inexpensive USB camera/microscope to photograph your finds. Just do a search online and many will show up.

First of all welcome to CT! It's nice here isn't it?

As others said before those are coin rolling marks and you'll see them on other denominations as well.

I have probably seen these marks on half dollars more than on other denominations, maybe because half dollars are larger than other coins so they have a greater chance at being scraped.

Best of luck on your coin searching, and congratulations on the 1964 Kennedy! I have never found a silver half dollar while coin roll hunting, so you've already beat me :)

Not a weird finish, that is gem quality, without the coin roller marks.
