I've been doing a birth year set (1941) for 10-15 years.
Still have about 20 affordable coins to go.
Can't make any headway on 2 centavos varieties of Peruvian coins.

    Birth year for me.
Although I have found a few special coins that were minted in 1966.

    Good planning by your parents.
After WWII and Korea, and too young for Vietnam.

I have some good news for you. The princely states used (and Nepal still uses today) a different calendar. Those 1966 coins are actually from 1909.

Yep, totally aware of that. Had similar issues with coins from Iran, Pakistan, Nepal, Sudan, etc. Different calendars kind of throw a wrench into things. :)

I collect 1946 and 1947. When I started putting together the collections, junk boxes were prevalent and just about anything could be found in them. The best coin I ever found in a foreign junk box was a VF or so 1941 Hong Kong Cent at a small coin show in Wahoo, Nebraska. I collect all metals, mint marks, Proof and Unc. I prefer VF or better but it is not always possible as rarity dictates. Since I prefer to have over not have, I own some low grade coins. When I see a coin I want, I try to buy it as I don't know when or if I will ever see another. Almost every year has a stopper or two. Some years have way more. eBay has changed collecting for the better. Worldwide inventories are available. So-called rarities can now be bought 24/7. Real rarities don't show up. When you search for coins for years that catalog a few dollars and can't find them, you know something that few other collectors know. Take advantage of that, knowledge is power.

Postage is a costly factor today as was previously said. If just starting, try to buy several from one Seller. Smaller coin shows are usually good places to find foreign coins. Some dealers still send out price lists. I bought lots of coins off of lists. Always call or email to reserve what you want.

Yeah, I had wondered about this 2092 coin at first! (Actually 2012, but that was
still in the future at the time.)

    Now THAT is amazing!!!
They were virtually ALL lost when the ship delivering them to Hong Kong was sunk by the Japanese.
I thought the only ones remaining were in the UK Government's hands.

I only know of 2 but I'm sure there has to be more. I offered to 1941 collector but he had a better condition one. I never saw it but had no reason to doubt it. I sold mine to a doctor for $400. His collection was then auctioned by Kagin's of Des Moines, Iowa. I don't know who bought it for around $700 there.
