I forgot all about this one. It's a 1912 $2.50 Indian Gold Coin. PCGS gave it an AU-55. Only 616,000 were minted and this is one of the higher mintages. If I remember correctly, only 2 others had higher mintages. It rates 13 out of 15 for high mintages. I just love the $2.50 Gold Indian Coins. I have the entire series, including the 1911-strong D. I'd buy the weak D if I could find a decent one at a reasonable price.
That would be the Philly issue. The D mintmark is a tough one. It's the key date and there are the strong and weak varieties. The strong 1911-D is the more expensive one and I bought that one first as the rest of the set is in the $400 range.
The $2.50 can be had for $400-$500 each depending on the grade but that 1911-D is the one that hurts. Sell one of those motorcyclebehind you and you can get one. Lol
I've always been more partial toward the $10 eagles myself; there's something about having a large hunk of gold in your hand that just can't be beat!
When I decide to put together a set of gold coins the only set that I could afford and complete in a year or sobwas the $2.50 Indians. Every set has at least one coin that's unaffordable.
The affordable one of the us gold piece i have seen esp with some of the older ones , imo But once you have to consider a key day or a scarce one , the piece can get a bit steep with condition .
I understand why. All you can do to afford one is to stop buying and save. That's what I did. The weak D is about $2,000 and you can easily double that for the strong D. The strong D is more desirable to have.
It all depends on the grade and condition you want but you'll need about $10,000. Best wishes on completing this set.
Afraid so Randy. I was working so many hours all I did was work and sleep, eating in between and mowing the 7 acres. I have 2 more pieces 2 post later. I'm so glad I'm retired.
