Anybody ever try to put together a set of all coin denominations from all of the countries for any particular relatively modern year? With about 200 countries and assuming an average of 5 to 6 coin denominations each, it would only be around 1200 or so coins to acquire.

I've thought about trying to do this for the year I was born...but the task seems too daunting.

The thought of it came to me today. It would be an interesting thing to try.

Wouldn’t be too expensive for a relatively recent year

Ask @Histman about this project. He is working on a set of 1966 dated
    coins for his wife.

Try compiling the list of coins first, then you will get a better idea of what it would take.

Is there a site that does this? Finding the coins would seem to be a challenge.
Again, maybe @Histman could share his experience on this topic.

Numista will give you most of the information. In the search box, click add filters, and plug in the needed year.

You might run in to some definitional problems too, like Taiwan. They have their own coins but are not considered a country by the U.N. (or by China for that matter!).

Look at the bottom of the numista page linked above.

If I were to tackle this project, I would start with trying to acquire one coin for every country (unless some have sets that you can buy for not much more than a single coin).

Circulation, commemoratives, proofs, medals? Or just denominations (some of which might only be proofs!)?

If I were to try this, it would be just of the typical circulating coins. But I am not, was just wondering if anyone had done so.

I have a friend who is trying to complete a Krause world coin book from 1995 with 1 of every coin in the book. He has close to 15,000 coins all flipped up in binders in a spare bedroom. Its quite a site to see

Those search filters at Numista are pretty neat. I typically only used that site to verify suspected silver content of foreign coins when I see them for sale at antique stores.

I started a project like this a few years ago, and very quickly decided to scale it back a bit.
Because of shipping cost, you will end up paying a lot more than the coin is worth.
My collection now consists of every silver coin minted in 1966.
I decided I would only buy uncirculated examples. There were a few coins that was hard to find, and some were rather expensive.
It has been a fun project, and I’m just a few coins away from being complete.

Many (most?) countries don’t issue coins every year. And if they do, not all denominations are minted.

Similar to Steve66 I started on a quest to obtain every coin minted in 1966 from around the world (not counting gold). It was quite a chore, but there are some great ways of finding out which coins were produced.

Numista https://en.numista.com/catalogue/index.php?ct=coin was a great resource for me. There others out there if you do a search as well. I like Numista because it lets you know whether the coin was produced for circulation, proof sets, commemorative, etc. Krause is great too if you know which coin you are looking for. There is also Coin Quest, Coins Catalog, etc. For 1966 there were 442 coins produced (not counting gold again) from around the world and I am down to needing six (India Princely States) which I am having a hard time finding, but that is it. Most of the coins can be found on eBay for very reasonable prices. But...it is definitely an undertaking and some coins are hard to find (Iran, Soviet Union, Sudan) and can be a bit expensive. The year you look for will have a lot to do with it. It seems 1966 was a difficult year. But...that is the fun of collecting, isn't it? Good Luck!

Is there something about 1966 that makes it special or is it pure chance that you both chose it independently (birth year?)?
