Went to Ernest Hemingway’s house in Key West today. Learned a little coin fact.
Seems Ernest had a stormy relationship with his 2nd wife and while he was out of the country having an affair with to be wife 3, wife 2 had a swimming pool built at their Key West home. When Ernest returned he was a bit upset and when he asked how much the pool cost his wife replied 20K (this in the early 1930’s during the depression). He hit the roof, reached into his pocket and pulled out a Lincoln Cent and throwing it to the ground said you should take my last red cent as well.
Well wife number 2 had the cent permanently placed in the concrete where it landed for all to see and it is said after they divorced that she always delighted in telling the story and showing the cent and proclaiming she was the only one to get his last red cent.
Took a few photos and tried to figure out the date? Best I can tell it is a 22 plain date. JK can't tell what the date is.

Nice story. What can we get out of it?

    Don't cheat on wife #2.
Don't let her have access to all that money to build a 20K pool.
Definitely...Don't give her your last red cent.
    AND....TAKE SHORTER VACATIONS.

Great story. Thanks for sharing. Is this the same house with all of the cats? We're going down to Key West in April, so we will have to take a look. :kewl:

Ah, but did you try to get any seccesionist coins. A few souveneir medals were used as currency during the 1983 seccession crisis. There are also lots of "conch republic" tchotkies available ranging from $2 stickers to $1000 diplomatic passports.

Yes - the polydactyl cats. A strange lot. While strolling around, watch out for the wild chickens!
