Hi, hope everyone's doing well. I was hoping to find some info. and the orientations on the lazy d nickels. I believe I know it for the 42-d (lazy d belly facing south), and I believe they 46-d has the belly of the "D" facing up. I understand there's also a 41-d and 53-d lazy d variety which I've been unable to find pictures of. I've been trying to find a copy of Wiles RPM book for Jefferson Nickels but everywhere I've checked is sold out or out of stock/print. Any help would be greatly appeciated.

Hey Pick-a-nik, Not sure about the 41-D, but I'll try to post picture of the 1953-D, which is RPM#1 in the Wiles RPM Book. Also, there is a 1958-D/Inverted D similar to the 1946-D/D and the 1953-D/D. The 1958-D/D is pictured in the Wiles RPM Book "Updated: 2001-2002" and listed as RPM#5. I have a picture of the 1958-D/D as well. I think both of these coins should be ranked right up there with the 1946-D/Inverted D. 1953-D/Inverted D 1958-D/Inverted D Dowgie
Thanks for posting for pictures. Your photo of the 53-d is by far clearer than the one pictured in Wiles (I was able to locate a book by the way). Although to me the 53-d looks more like a rotated rpm rather than a horz. rpm. I'm looking at the inside of the "d" although it does has a small bulge of the the left-so perhaps it's horizontal, maybe a 53-d/d/horz. d. The 58-d does look like alot like the 46-d/horz d variety. I just got back from the Money Show in Portland and saw 3 42-d/horz d's. Two were in vg to fine and I was in AU. A didn't see any 46-d/horz d's though which I thought was a little odd since I've been able to find 4 by going thru bags of Jeffs. Maybe it's because the 42-d is listed in Red Book and the 46-d isn't so not as many people are aware of it. I couldn't even find and 41-S large s variety and I've found many of these (perhaps this variety was released in my area so their not as rare is in other parts of the country, anyway thanks again for the pics. of the 53-d I'll go back thru my bag for this date now that I know for sure what I'm looking for.
Pick-a-nik, I meant to correct you on a term you are using. I consider the 1953-D/D, 1958-D/D and the 1946-D/D and "Inverted Ds", not "Horizontal Ds". The 1942-D/D is a Horizontal positioning of the other D. Using Inverted is the same as Upside-Down, which the previous 3 dates are. Dowgie
BigDoggie- Thanks for the info.- I hadn't considered these to be different from the 42-d. I still think the 46-d/d is a horz. d however, it looks to me like the part of the d to the left of the prominent d is a horz. d facing up. I also note that Breen described this as a lazy d and Allen and Potter describe it as a horiz. variety, however you are correct Wiles does list it as inverted. Seems to be some disagreement among the experts on this one just as there is on the 54-d/s variety.
