I was looking through I my CPG and I saw that a lot of the IHC have misplaced dates in the rim. On Monday I had found two IHC in a bank roll ( I know way cool) ... so I looked at both and I think I found one. It's not either of the ones listed in the CPG for this date. It looks like you can see part of the 8 and part of the 9. Can any experts out there give an opinion?
The date position over the denticles appears correct, so I would stick with the MPD-005 according to Flynn's " Two dates are better than one" Guide to Misplaced dates. It has a cross reference to FND-006. R-6. premium factor 2.5X to 3.5X ( but that may be off since 1997). This is a hard one, may be more common, just not noted. Good eye! Jim
So you would say it is definitely a misplaced date? You're just not absolutely certain on which one it is. And you would guess MPD-005. I need to get that book.
I would say it "appears" to be a misplaced date, but it is very difficult to say "definitely" from photos, as MPD-005, is in my opinion one of the most difficult one to identify. The shape of the denticles where the digits would be are mishaped in the same way. But as we variety collectors know, often innocent effects appear to be a variety. Not trying to weasel out, just 90% sure, not 100%. Jim
It is a misplaced date. As noted though, there are many for 1898 and identifying this one is tough. Check to see if there is any evidence of a portion of the 1 in the denticles. That may help. Thanks, Bill
I was going to say that it looked off for an MPD-005 but then I decided it probably is. Something about the position of the date in the field made me hesitant, but desertgem I think has got it right.
Yes, the diamonds in between the dentils. They are supposed to be empty but the ones that are circled have loops in them from the 8 and the 9.
Great eyes. You must have studies this coin a lot to notice the MPD. It makes me want to go over all of my Indian Head Cents but that would mean reviewing a completed collection!!! Just recently I found out that my 1864 L is a Snow 3. It does pay to review your old coins that you haven't studied before. As well as those you've looked at before. Nice find, grnwavdav. Bruce
