OK, at the bank today, cashing in coins, the teller brings me a stack of series 1990 $50 bills. In the stack was a 1981 $50 with what looks like an Autopen Autograph right above Donald Regan's signature. It looks similar to his, the last part of the signature looks really different than the engraved signature. What do you guys think, is this the real thing? The first letter looks like an S and the last like a D. Maybe someone fitting that description worked with Regan or in his office maybe?
Gatzdon.... Looks like a Gus or Susy Cormed or something along those lines... That chicken scratch is worse than mine!! RickieB
These are whats known as Courtesy Autographs. Handwritten or Autopen autographs on currency that already has the individuals printed name on the note. This was a popular thing to do as far back as the 1930s and became even more popular in the 50s and 60s. These Courtesy Autographs can be worth very little ($20) or a few hundred dollars depending on whos autograph it is, if both Treasurer and Secretary have signed the note, condition of the note and if it is a star note or not. I couldnt find a value on your particular note nor could I find an authentic example of his signature.
I have aithentic examples of DR's sig, but you don't even need one of those to see that it doe snot match the printed version. It could be someone famous, but I don't recognize it.
Looks like someone was practicing their forgery skills. I think I will try copying the signatures on some bills in my wallet.
I just thought I'd show you my autographed dollar bill. I ran into Conan O'Brien in the street and this was all I had that he could sign.
Thanks JBK, the tail end of that signature didn't look close, but I thought maybe someone here would recognize the signature as it seems to have been an autopen. Like maybe someone mixed up two bills while getting autographs.
