I got 135 of them at a couple of my banks back in November or so. With the economy in the cr&pper, some people are having to spend stuff they wouldn't have ordinarily. It is a good idea to get "in" with tellers, bring them treats etc. and they will save stuff for you.

oddly enough the credit union my friend works at had about 10 of them one time I went.
I haven't asked for them since then, since I wasn't too interested, lol.

The bank I worked at didn't order them...there wasn't any point. The vast majority of customers didn't want them and everyone preferred the $1 bill. That's the problem with the system. To get the $1 coin accepted they need to get rid of the $1 bill.

As far as Ike's...they are out there. Most banks don't stock them but every now and again will get them in a deposit. You just have to catch the bank on the right day. If you are an account holder at some banks, and you befriend an employee (just to where the recognize you)...if you'd ask them to contact you when they get some they probably would. We had a customer we did that for.

Does anyone work at a bank?

If you do work at a bank, can you order the eisenhower dollars? Has anyone tried just writing at thew bottom of the form since they are not on there?

I walked into a bank and I wrote on the bottom of the form, "give me all your Eisenhower dollars in stock." The police showed up minutes later and took me in for questioning! Kidding but I wonder if they can either call the big vault and ask if they have any or if they can write it on the bottom of the form. I will push the issue with my bank if all it takes is to manually write it at the bottom of the coin ordering form.

    Thanks in advance!:hail:

The only way a bank can get Ike dollars is if they walk in with a customers deposit. I kid you not, five years ago I got 4 original BU rolls of Ikes from 1977-1978 in a small rural N. Calif bank that I banked with when I was out on there. The teller said they had been there as long as she could remember, and she had then been there about 15 years.

I don't know why you would want them but,

I'm not quite sure you would one them especially in circ. grade - that's kind of like saying ugly times bad equals gross but,
I would go ahead and get them all nice BU because they are not very expensive and certainly not hard to find but they are ugly. I guess the only coin uglier than an Eisenhower dollar is a SBA, or Roosevelt.
You cannot even find them for a dollar in circ. grades at shows, dealer to dealer price is a whopping $1.05 to $1.15 each but they are ugly - oh, I guess a covered that already right?

A few years ago I was working as a cashier in a gas station and I found a 1976-S Ike and a 1974-S Ike in the cash register, along with a 1976-S Silver JFK. I ended up selling them mostly because I am not into proofs.

    A bunch

I have like 200 or so, once in a while I will grab a few and buy stuff with them. I just love peoples reactions when I pay for something with them. I would normally only give one Ike and the reset in other forms. The reactions range from:

"Are you sure you want to pay with this, isn't it worth something"

    to

Puzzeled clerk that does not know what it is at first then says, "wow I have not seen one of these in forever"

    to

"Omg we were just talking about these the other night and how they are not around anymore."

    to

As tips people normally appreciate them and smile-

Once in Alaska I paid with 2 dollar bills, 1 ike, a bunch of gold dollars and the waiter said, "I'm keeping all of this!"

Two dollar Bills are easy to get of course as are the gold dollars but people just dont see them unless they go to the train station and get the change from the purchase of a ticket with cash. I did find a vending machine once that took the gold dollars though! I was so thankful as I was very thirsty and they didnt have any quarters at the place for the machine. The guy told me the machine would not take the gold dollars but it did!

The Kennedy often plays out the same way when I use them. Many look at them a few times before realizing they are a half dollar and not a dollar. I have also had people give me chage as if the Kennedy half dollar was a dollar coin. I believe in Karma so I always correct them.

Still searching for a bank teller to try and order some- just write it in or call a few vaults-

    Best,

If I get a $2 bill, JFK half, an SBA, IKE, or President Dollar in change I often give them out as tips at restaurants or hotels, in the hope that a waiter/waitress or housekeeper will get the collecting bug from it.

I don't believe they can be ordered by a bank because they're not available. Brinks and the other repositories would only have whatever comes in and I don't think many are circulating out there.

Let's not forget - there were more 1979 SBA dollars minted than all IKE business strikes put together!

Most coin counting machines in banks and grocery stores will not count Ikes. The size?

...............that's probably true and since 1979 the dollar coin became smaller right up to the present. the machines were re-programmed to accept the 'new' sized dollar.

On the other hand possibly they COULD be ordered if you could just get the bank to do so. As you say the repositories would only have whatever came in, but what come in does not go back out and so keeps piling up. In one thread I've seen (Don't remember what forum I was on) someone had called around to the repositories and found that one of them was sitting on bags of Ikes but he can't find a bank that is willing to order them.

I have talked to a few banks in my area, and they tell me they can not order the Eisenhower Dollars at all. They are more then happy to order boxes of halves for me. The Credit Union I use, will every now and again get some Eisenhower's but they only get them because someone deposited them. They know I am a coin collector, and when I show up, they will tell me that they have some in the vault.
In the last four months they have only had someone deposit them twice, but it was around 200 dollars worth, in which the vast majority of these were the bi-centennial, and no silver. I went through them when I got home, and just took the ones I need for my book, the rest I have been spending at local stores, just because I love the reaction I get. Some of the younger cashiers will look at them and ask if they are real money. I think I still have about 75 dollars worth thrown into a jar, seeing as they are very worn from circulation.

Well since i coin roll search halfs i also ask if they have large dollar coins.Widen your search, not just your town, you have to be willing to go one or two over if you really want to get some good coinage.
I have a few ikes, have not gotten any silver but i did keep one for my personal collection,Rest are in my coin jar ;]

When I was in Chicago a few years ago I stopped and stoked my habit at Harlan J Berk numismatists. While I was shopping a guy brought in a bunch of circ Ikes and they bought them all unsearched for $1.10 a piece. Guess there is a market over face for them.

    Best Regards,
