Finally my coin arrived today in the mail:mouth:. I'm pretty excited it's my first Morgan CC. Just sharing it with the forum. I know the pics arent the best, but does anyone want to guess the grade? It was graded by PCGS in a new holder. -Mike
I can only go MS-63 PL because I can't tell much from the pictures. Could easily be MS-65 DMPL if it's really a lot nicer.
MS-64 DMPL. Too much marks/chatter on the cheek to be an MS65, so I'll take a guess of MS-64 with it being DMPL. Nice coin!
I'd say plain ole MS-65. Looks to be too much scruffing of the cameo to make PL and without the PL, there is no DM. Sweet! :thumb: Ribbit
I am going to say MS-63/64PL but it might go DMPL! There is a lot of haze on the coin and the slab appears to have some scratches and possible hazing as well. I edited and cropped the pictures and have attached them. Check them out and make another or the same call! Frank Oh and I forgot to mention! It appears to be a "Closed CC" Variety.
Very nice coin. Hard to tell from the photos if it is a DMPL but at the least it is a PL. My guess on a PCGS Grade would be MS-64.
Pictures could be sharper but all I see are luster grazes in some of the usual places and a coin that escaped scratches for the most part and any deep hits from reeded edges. I give it a 64 and I think that's a deep-mirror surface. Nice coin. I'd take a look at these on Heritage just to check if it could run with the 65s, but I'm pretty sure it has too many grazes for that.
I was thinking that there is at least one Date of a Carson City minted Morgan Dollar that has a "Closed CC" Variety (VAM)**. However, I can't be sure without searching every VAM for the Carson City Minted Morgan's! While many of the Dates have several VAM's with an "Open CC" Mintmark, there are generally only a few with "Closed CC" Mintmarks. Considering this, if these are not considered as separate Varieties, I somewhat believe that they should be! **I could have confused the term with the term "Close CC" used in identfying some Carson City VAM'd Morgans! (Some have a close "CC" Mintmark and others have a "Wide CC" Mintmark.) Frank
The pics are out of focus, but based on what I can see I don't think that coin would be PL. The fields just don't seem to have enough reflectivity. But PCGS does have more lenient standards for PL/DMPL. I'd call it a 63.
Yeah sorry about the pics one of these days I'll get it right.:hammer: Anyway One person nailed it. Graded MS-65 Good job Handsome Toad. As for VAM, I don't see any VAM's for the closed CC variety for the 1881, Only the "shifted to the left" variety, but then again I'm terrible at VAM's. Thanks Everyone for your posts. - Mike
Not enough reflectivity? Really? Looks pretty reflective to me, seen stuff with less in PL slabs easily.
I think Handsome Toad best explained it. I believe it definitely has the reflectivity to be at least PL, but there was just to many bag marks on the obv for it to get a PL.
