Went to a coin show today and picked up this 48S only because it has the strangest S I've seen on a 48! No ball or serrif? Any thoughts?
Also provided a picture of a (Normal 48S) S for comparison.
Picked up a few other coins I'll post later as well.

    Nickelman.
Look at the (S) on the the coins from 1946 to 1954 the Nickel Analyst book says the 1948 has the nicest appearing (S) you might find that same (S) on those dates also. I have a roll set I will look also.

I looked at some of my roll set the years 46-s 48-s and the 54 -s and they were 007 also.

Thanks, I've never noticed that on varietyvista before. So is this MMS-007 a cent punch used on the nickels that year? All the 48S's I'vs seen had other type mm's like the other one I pictured!

No--at least that isnt' the way I understand it. IIRC 007 was used on a few differnet types of coins...but the "font" was the same. The punch that was used to put a mintmark on cent dies was most likely used over again on nickels, quarters etc. But I'm sure as time went by the punches broke, got misplaced, etc...that is why some years have different types.

VarietyVista has alot of info---but IMHO it is hard to move about in. Also, if I understand James correctly, it is going to be locked down where you will need to pay to get in. (Maybe he was talking about the Ebooks...can't remember.)

Weired---I haven't studied MM like James so I best not comment on something I do not know. I did note at the top of his page he says that the numbering system he has listed there (ex: 007) is ONLY for cents. Odd...that he lists the dimes, nickels, quarters and halves, yet doesn't list the numbering system for those.

Nickelman--I was looking over the list again and your MM looks more like 008 than 007....
I would suggest either seeing if James would be willing to look at your photo, or would post it over on the CONECA board and see what they think.

    Hey Speedy,

I picked up a 46 Sans S at the Baltimore coin show a few weeks back and until this post had never heard of this. Was trying to research this as to mintage figures of the different mm's and got to looking at the example on the link you posted and I believe you may be correct that mine appears to be inverted!
The problem is I can't find anything else on the 46 & 48 Sans S! The mm example on Variety Vista is from a cent so maybe all nickels wwith this mm is inverted as compared to the cent?

Ohhh.....you have a good point there. I don't have anything about the mintmark styles either...and the only one that I believe does is Wiles. As of this point, I don't think he has released anything other than cents.

I'm pretty sure that John Wexler doesn't have any data on MM on his website...have you checked there?....

The only stuff I have on MM"s is the photos that you, and a few others have sent me, and what I've added of my own stuff, on the website. I've still got a large folder of stuff to put online...time.....
