I didn't know what it was when I bought it...I got it because it caught my eye...and besides, it was $5.

Anyone know any info on what it is....after further research, I guess the reverse depicts Peregrin which is the saint of cancer (?)

check out my newest lovely token, and don't worry y'all, I'm not buying everything I see again..lol...I just collect medals and tokens when I see one I like for dirt cheap :):

Going to a Catholic grade school for 8 years , it sure looks like something the Nuns would hit us with , I mean give us .

But What would they give you medals like this for? Maybe graduation or communion, or confirmation?

    Stainless,

I think you did really well with that purchase.

That's a 1964 medal commemorating the Pope John Paul II's Papal Pilgrimage to the Holy Land.

Here's an example, but I don't know what it sold for: http://www.jkmilitaria.com/Vatican.html

Silly me. It was Pope Paul VI, not John Paul II.

Maybe I should've read the medal.

They used to make medals for lots of things , not for graduation or communion they never gave us anything except holy cards , But the year our new church was built they issued medals of the Divine Infant because that was the name of our parish , I remember my mom got one for Pope Johns death , they could be issued by the different orders of priests or nuns , Churches even the Vatican so who knows who issued yours ,

Thanks for he link...mine doesn't have the ribbon though and looks to be good other than a vedigris spot on the reverse. shall I try to get that off with a toothpick?

I don't think a toothpick would hurt anything.

I'm not sure the ribbon on the medal in the ad is original. That may have been something added aftermarket.

You might consider contacting the seller to see what he sold that piece for.

I'm not going to hazard a guess as to what your medal is worth, but I will say that it's a good bit more than $5.

reminds me of Marylin Monroe, skirt flowing while over the grate. Good find!

    Shame.

Nuns where I went used a ping pong paddle. I got 2 broken on my bare butt the first year!

Whatever it is, I'm not a fan of the reverse type. I'll pass, thank you. :D

    yardstick? ping pong paddle? never!
the ruler she used was steel edged however and the result did require several stiches!

    Oh, the good old days!
