While coin roll hunting yesterday, I came across this 1980P quarter that seems to have been struck thru something. The obverse and reverse all lack detail in the areas. It does not seem damaged in any other way. It is not glue or any other adhesive, the coin is not bent. The area in question starts at the I in LIBERTY, goes across Washingtons forehead and goes back just above IGWT on the obverse. On the reverse, it starts at the first T in States, takes all of the left wing of the eagle and goes to QUAR of QUARTER. All detail is there but is weaker than the rest of the coin's lettering. Help, any ideas? Thanks in advance of any guesses.
NO, very damaged coin. Spend it so someone else can find it and possibly have the same enjoyment you have had with it while learning more about coins. PS The appearance of the forehead of the coin and the field is the clue to what the mark is and why it is not a strike thru.
PMD, or post mint damage, happening after it left the mint. Seeing displaced metal around an indent like this is a sure sign it is not a mint error. Hope that helps.
It's been in circulation for 40 years. It was damaged early and has worn down the rough spots. Spend it.
Thanks for all your help. It will go back into the wild next week when I go to the bank for another 14 rolls of quarters.
