These problems are numismatic Darwinism. Those who learn and adapt will succeed. Those who buy unaware will be doomed to repeat it until they switch to state quarters.

Education in any area requires time and effort, but it is the only defense. Once you have it, and keep updating your knowledge, you have the advantage always.

What is really dangerous is an educated fraud!

As far as I know the IRS doesn't take cash. And that is the reality of the monetary supply. Cash is meaningless on the grand scale. Not only are we off the gold standard, but for all particle purposes we are off the physical monetary system all together.

I'm sure those are already collectable. How much would a 1962 Dinners Club card be worth?

It costs nothing to use a card if you pay off the balance each month. That way you don't have to carry nearly as much cash, and making a single payment once a month is no different from making a hundred small payment throughout the month. Also, with the right card you get benefits such as cash back or gasoline discounts so you can actually earn money just by using a credit card.

Debit card. If you pay it off every month, whats the sense in having it? I think this is why most Americans are so far into debt they'll never not owe someone the rest of their lives.

They've been making mintages in the hundreds of millions of decades. Somehow the hobby survived. If coin collecting didn't bail out after all these years, it won't now.

    What's ruining our hobby ?

Nothing. Our hobby is not ruined.

Credit card, not debit card. Apparently you didn't read the whole post you got my quote from. It answers your question.

$13 and change and my cards are paid off! :hail::kewl::hail:Now I just have to work on the house payments to be debt free. 2/3 of the way there @31yo. Hopefully by then the coins won't be out of reach.

ANA offers a correspondence course - Detecting Counterfeit & Altered US Coins by JP Martin. They also sell an excellent DVD of the same title (again by JP Martin). If you want the best education available you should sign up for the 4 1/2 course of the same name offered at every ANA Summer Seminar (taught by JP Martin & Bob Campbell).

I'm credit card free myself at 33, got away from them several years ago. Czech Rep is a cash/ATM society, though house buying is another story. F**k being in debt!

Using credit cards does not necessarily lead to debt. Using credit cards with no self-restraint does.

I pay my credit card off every month. Using my credit card is much easier than using cash or writing a check for every purchase.

Thats interesting. I tried to pay by cash once and they insisted I had to right a check. How do you pay the IRS in cash, although for most people they not only pay electronically, but they have it taken out of the paycheck.

I meant thats what I use, David. If I can't pay it off right when I buy it, I don't buy it.
