So I read that the quarter, in 2010 will again feature another 10 year long series of designs. This time it will be commemorating all of our nation's National Parks.

    What a load of crap.

Sadly, I disagree. I don't think that the commenoration of our National Parks is crap at all. The 5 ounce silver bullion versions of the quarter will be f'ing hot.

Kudos to the Mint for keeping it fresh and current. Way to go Mr. Moy!

I think its time to give it up already though! I mean 11 years! Thats a whole generation who doesnt know life without the quarter changing 5 times a year. Give us a break already! I think that it might be a good idea, but I think its crap that they are doing it so soon!

And the 5 ounce silver versions will probably just look like huge medals instead of coins.

The Mint and Mint Director do what Congress instructs them to do. Give credit (or blame as the case may be) to Congress.

LOL the mint comes out with new designs and people complain then you get people complaining that the coins have not changed in design for years :D
The way I look at this is it is a excellant way to get younger people interested in our hobby, they see something new in there pocket change and some of them will want to know more.

they're not new designs. They are adaptations of the old designs. I understand that in much of the world all coins have the same image of Queen Elizabeth on them, but US quarters really don't need George Washington on them, with crazing cheap campy ideas on the reverses.

Yes but after stagnent designs for decades what we wanted was the occasional change in designs, not multiple designs per year for year after year. They went from one extreme position (which the Treasury defended by saying tha you should never have more than one design in circulatio at a time because the people would become confused and not know what was a real coin.) to the other extreme (which they say is good because it creates interest in the coins and gets people to pay more attention to them.).

These are my feelings exactly. They could do what they are doing with the Sacagaweas to all circulating coins: change the reverse yearly. That would be enough for most people. They could also stick to one non-circulating dollar coin. The vaults are getting full! The Roosevelt dime needs some type of makeover. The closest it got was a composition change in 1965, and a new mintmark location three years later. The story for Kennedy halves is almost as dull. The only difference is the 40% silver run which ruined any chances of it ever circulating regularly. Now it's an economy priced non-circulating legal tender commemorative at best.

Yeah I wish they would just make one design and keep it for 20 years or so and then move on, but that many designs in one year... It makes it hard to keep up with varieties and errors.

I was hoping that National Parks thing wouldn't pass, but apparently it snuck under the radar towards the end of the last Congressional session. Christmas is special because it only happens once a year... if it happened constantly and continuously, wouldn't be much reason to care about it. Feel the same way here... I'm glad that they're putting new designs in place but constantly changing the reverse several times a year is a bit extreme. Once a year I think would be a perfect compromise.

Well perhaps it will all end with the National Parks quarters, and then it is back to the standard "eagle" design from the past.

It certainly has gotten alot of press (good and bad) which can't be too bad for the hobby.

I think that its just stupid to change it so much, espicially after 11 years of constant change. I dont totally dissagree with this program. I just think that they could have either waited a few more years or could have put it on the dime or something. Then of course the dime is way to small to put any significant design on. If it keeps up like this. I will have my grandkids on my lap telling them that I remember when the quarter's design didnt change 5 or 6 times a year. And thats when they will look at me like I'm dumb and tell me how old I am!

All being said, I'm totally against this program. However I will still collect it because when I hand my collection down to my children I dont want to tell them that there is a gap of some years in my collection simply because I dissagreed with the coins.

How about vice-presidents and state fish? There's no limit to what they can come up with!

I thought the county pennies parody article on the Onion was hilarious until it started getting to close to reality (why I can't find Dlibert funny anymore; it's too much like real life to see the humor in it).
