Is ebay a safe place to buy coins from? I'm looking for a 100 Coin State Quarter Set in atleast an MS-60(Uncirculated) condition.
It can be a safe place to buy coins if you know what you're doing. I wouldnt pay anything over face value for the set in MS60-64. If you're new to Ebay then make sure you read their feedback carefully.
You're going to pay over face, period. The question is, "How much?" Since there's $25 face value, I'd say $30 max (20% over face.) But then you have S&H. 100 quarters will weigh about a pound. Then there's packaging. Total = about 1 lb 4 oz First Class and Media Mail are out. Parcel Post is probably not good. Next cheapest is Priority Mail at $8+ (figure $10 S&H). You'll do okay if you can keep the total cost under $40.
Agreed with Indianhead. There shouldn't be a big mark up. But, that is assuming that you are only looking for the unc, and not the proofs or silver proofs. Then, (with proofs) a lot of bucks.
I found a set that is not on ebay for about $70. http://www.usstatequarters.com/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idcategory=241&idproduct=1988 Is it too much money?
Yes, way too much. You can get the full business strike UNC set (no proofs) not in an album for $40-50 on eBay. That's why I say if you can beat $40 you did good. $50 and then you'd be running average price. DON'T FORGET S&H.
Ok thanks for the help i'll keep looking then. I also wanted to know if $260 dollars is a good deal for all the clad proof sets?
CoinCollector - What you apparently don't realize is that it is very hard to answer such questions for not all sets are equal. Some of the sets might be full of beat up coins, coins with ugly toning or damaged packaging. So while one particular date set might be quite nice and worth the money - several more might not be. The best way to accumulate these sets is to pick them out 1 by 1. Only in that way can you be sure that you will be happy with you buy.
Picking out coins 1 by 1 is the way to go. You can select the coin(s) you want at the grade you want. I would look for a seller that has the set offered separately and buy as many as I could there and before making the bid I'd talk to the seller about combined shipping. Doing this you get the best of both worlds. That is if a couple extra dollars won't break the bank. The only other way I would consider buying a complete set is if the seller listed them as being on average MS6?, expecting once you got the set there may be one or two coins you will want to change. Feedback is extremely important but it’s not 100% fool proof. Maybe before you consider eBay you might ask the dealers here on CT if they offer the coins or a set form. If that doesn’t satisfy you then ask the members here once you found a seller if anyone had good or bad experiences with them. I’m sure with all the help and support you will find here both your time and money will be spent wisely. Good Luck and Happy Hunting!
I think its fine as long as you find a pig seller(probably they have a actual business and do this for a living. And make sure they have 99-100% feedback. I buy allot of my coins from ebay.
To answer your question, NO! But to have listed over 7,000 items it is a lot of work to take the actual image of each and every coin. I would be lead to believe that the photo's are not of the actual coin. I've listed 50 auctions in one day and to take a scan of each was a process in itself. With this seller having over 70,000 feedbacks with a 99.9% positive feedback rating. I would buy with the thoughts that the coin could grade no higher than MS60 since of the several items I looked at not one had a specific grade assigned to it other than uncirculated or proof. It doesn't say Brilliant Uncirculated his wording is covering every grade the industry has to offer in an uncirculated grade. Again I wouldn't bid over MS60 then you won't be disappointed. Who knows, you just might get surprised and get a MS63.
Well i mainly liked this seller because he sold the "State Quarter Clad Proof Sets" starting at $0.99 with the box and the COA
There are a lot of dealers that buy proof and mint sets by the hundreds. They cherry pick the high grade coins, toned coins, or the rare Cameo’s and sell them separately or submit them to a third party grading company. Since ebay is such a good venue to sell the boxes of singles that don’t meet their standards, buy with the prescience of mind that at best it will be a middle of the road coin. If you’re looking for a PF69 then make sure the description at least says someone looked at the coin and assigned the grade to it. This way if you are not satisfied you can return it because the description in your opinion was not accurate. Here the only guarantee you are getting is that it is a proof.
state quarter set to each his own. i bought the complete 100 coin BU set from tv , shiped for $99.00. I'm very pleased with my purchase. I checked ebay and a few dealers. There was no guarantee from them , how were there coins touched. some are not in a holder, some bagged, etc. did they have a cold beer in one hand, chips in the other and build these sets. did they pick there nose between each coin. you get where I'm coming from. I have found one almost BU set on ebay shipped for $55. But decided I did not need two sets. what I'm saying here is to shop around, look, read the small print, and get what you will be satisfied with. Good Luck.
I'm not looking for graded coins. I just want the clad proof state quarters still in their original us mint holders
