I thought I would share a coin-related adventure I had yesterday. I have a new dog, adopted via a rescue organization (see avatar). I came home from work yesterday hoping to find the new ASE I had ordered had been delivered. Our mail arrives through a mail slot in our front door. Alas, just the usual junk and bills. As I strolled past the dog bed toward the kitchen, I noticed a package, partially opened and somewhat the worse for wear. Yes, the coin had arrived. Fortunately, the coin was securely wrapped in paper and bubblewrap around the Airtite it was shipped in, so no damage was done besides a somewhat masticated packing slip. I am thinking of changing his name to Eagle. Perhaps I'll don sunglasses and take him to the next coin show I attend to see what he picks up. Best wishes to you all.
Suggest one of those cages to catch the mail as it comes through the door... although if you get a dirty coin through the post.. it might get 'licked' clean eh?? Best wishes, Mike.
Follow-up Thanks for the suggestion re: a mailcage. I'm already trying to design something that will work. I'm glad my beast didn't get to the coin & eat it....though it might be a way to "naturally tone" one someday. The pun about picking up the "cent" wasn't lame at all: well-played, Sir. My next dog may be a "Burnished" Mountain Dog.
Some dogs see those things flying in through the door as their toys and love to do their dog thing with them. If, by chance, he does start going after small items, like coins, you should be aware that the zinc in modern cents can be fatal to a dog.
Hey...tough looking dog. I'm sure he could handle the zinc. As long as the cents came out in the same condition they went in there should be no problem but if they sit in there a couple of days it could be bad. Just to be on the safe side, any time a pet eats something non-organic. a vet should be consulted.
