This coin will absolutely details grade so won't even be good for a low ball set which examples must straight grade to avoid intentional damage set inclusions.
It is good for a hole filler but it's priced too high, you can get a better example for less than this that would straight grade.

This is a prime example of when you buy a coin collection in those folders off someone, why you pop them out and check the reverse of the coins of value. So you don't find this surprise after you've forked over the cash.

I can't say exactly how or why someone would do this from these pictures, but this isn't a weak strike or a strike through grease, this is intentional damage. coins don't naturally wear in circulation in this manner.
Maybe at one point glued face down to a bar top or floor or something like that.. who knows really... maybe a kid used it for a couple years in a knock hockey game as a puck.... but it's clearly not "acceptable" except as a cheap hole filler for a folder at this point.

I just looked it up again on ebay, someone bought it for $115.00 apparently.

it's a shame he listed it as "fine" in his listing, Maybe the obverse, but absolutely not the reverse...

Looking at the listing in magnified view, it's clear someone scraped it down around the edges a while back, it's old damage, but for sure it's damage as the scrapes go in different directions.

And I'm thinking it's possible someone used it to balance out a chair or something along this line at some point and that side of the coin scraped along the floor for a while, maybe not long but long enough to get this far.

yeah, I been thinking about this too much. LOL

The coin the OP shows was for $115.00, which was the sold price. I paid about the same for this one.

I too have been racking my brain thinking of ways.;)
Yes the obverse had to be nicely stuck into wood or maby rubber on the end of table leg or chair to preserve it??

Too bad the buyer paid $115 as ebay gave me a discount and offered it to me for $105.o_O

Collecting Nut, that is one nice one for the money.
Ebay or USA Coin.com won't even come close to having one that nice for the money. Also the waiting for mail these days is awful.
I just don't have any coin shops near me to begin with and when I look up some from neighboring towns they aren't open during this covid crisis or don't have one.
I have a 14D already in one of two albums and just need another 14D to just about finish my 2nd album. Both need just the 09S VDB and finished.

This lock down and slow work had me start the 2nd album which I didn't need:rolleyes:

I found out yesterday that my local LCS will let me in without a mask so I'll be going to see them in a week or two.

Also, the '14-D I posted above was mailed to me by an online dealer that I have dealt with for many years. Only took 4 days to reach me.

Was this 14D a somewhat recent purchase?
I have been buying some silver 1/2's for very close to melt price from USA Coin.com
The 2 main sellers are using regular envelopes with just 1st class shipping. Yes it worries me some with no tracking but it saves on costs.
For example I will order "6" 1/2's and they will be sent in 3 envelopes, 2 in each. They rarely come at the same time though, and have seen a weeks time in difference. I have had newer orders delivered before the old orders also from the same seller.

It seems the one seller is up there in age and doesn't go out much these days and hands his postal carrier his orders instead of going to the Post office.
I didn't ask his age out right, but his hand writing shows signs of it, unless he has a essential tremor like I do?

I bought it 2-3 weeks ago. Shipped in a package with tracking and I do not pay for shipping as that's included in the price.
