I have a silver certificate and I was wondering if I went to a bank if I were to get a $1 silver coin or a dollar worth of silver?

No, silver is no longer redeemable as if 1974 I believe. You get a buck in regular coins

I was told by many people that silver and gold is still redeemable with gold and silver certificates

Either way I'm not going to spend it because it was a gift given to me by a worker I got a few of my coins at. I was just wondering.

One way to find out -- take them to your bank but do be ready for disappointment. Paying out gold ended in 1933 and Silver certificates continued to be issued until late 1963, when the $1 Federal Reserve Note was released into circulation. For several years, existing silver certificates could be redeemed for silver, but this practice was halted on June 24, 1968.

PS: Glad you're going to keep it. Your note is now a part of history.

Thnx... it also has sentimental value... It's a great story actually... I went to an antique mall and was looking at coins and saw this note but I couldn't afford it because I was buying a ton of other coins and the lady knew that I wanted it and she bought it for me... I was so thankful

TO BE FAIR... you could TECHNICALLY get a dollar in silver coin if the teller just so happened to have a stack of silver coins.

bht it’s not a legal requirement that the bank exchanges silver certa for silver coin

However, if you brought me an average circulated 1923 $1 silver certificate, I'd trade it for a dollar's worth of silver without hesitation.

I have a few $2 bills and a silver certificate and 1993 and 1999 dollar bill... nothing special about 1999, 1996, and a few of the $2 ones... I have two 1976 $2 bills but that's about all of the American paper money I have... My foreign ones are from all around the world and have about 100 of those

    Edit:Unc condition

You should post some of your foreign notes sometime.

I love world notes. Crazy cheap and often amazingly beautiful. I’d go bankrupt on a handful of old Americans, but could get dozens of not hundreds of quality old world

Yeah, I should... I have a 1 cent note from China... Most of them are only worth a few cents though... are people still willing to see those?

I know... American notes are awesome to have but they're so expensive... mainly because paper money comes in $1 and up unlike coins that are a few cents
