Hi everyone, what do you think about the toning on this coin. And I was wondering what the grade, and value on it would be and what YOU would pay for it. It was part of a type set for many years so that is where the toning came from. hya:
SLQ,s aren't really my thing, but I had to comment on the toning. Normally I don't care for toned coins, but I really like this one. It is not over the top and the way the colors lighten towards the center makes it look like Liberty is walking into the sunlight. I like it. :thumb:
Thanks. This is my first SLQ. I will reveal what I payed after some more comments. And after I hear what Lehigh would pay for it....
It's a 1929-S for starters. the 1920-S is an early Type 2 coin and the date is on a flat plinth, starting in 1925 the date was recessed to protect it from wear. If this coin was a 1920 it would be dateless. The coin is VG details, but has been harshly cleaned. Value is about double melt, or around $4-5.
That is polished indeed when you could make out the scratches on a coin like that it brings them out more a clear indication of being polished nice toning through ,but i wouldn't buy it cleaned. They polished it to bring out the toning a dumb move indeed it would have been a nice coin if it wasn't tampered with. Jazzcoins Joe
Even with the polishing , I like it , Vipers right , it looks like she's walking into the sunlight . rzage
Crap I payed 22.50 for it. I guess I overpayed... And that sucks that it was polished it may get returned then...
Well you can return it. It's absolutely been polished and absolutely a 1929-S and worth 20% of your bid. Also, SLQs don't tend to rainbow tone.
Not to mention that he has a Barber quarter for sale with the exact same type of toning as this one which leads me to believe this is more than likely AT'ing. Which is something I've noticed before with this seller. Toning should be unique. You don't just have the same guy selling different denominations of coins all with the same type of toning at the same time. IMO, he must not know coins very well and I think he's a scam artist. I'd steer clear.
Definitely a 1929. I like the colors, but I don't like toning in general on any coin below AU. It seems like most that I have seen are either AT, or have been cleaned and then retone. I'd definitely return this one.
Can a coin with that much wear tone like it has? Or put another way, will my AG/G walkers tone if I don't take care of them? (I'm not implying that the OP's SLQ is AG/G)
They were both in the same album as a type set. He is defiantly not a scam artist. He is a very reputable seller that I have bought from multiple times.
Sure it can, if you clean the snot out of it and AT it. 1) I don't ever recall seeing a target toned SLQ that wasn't AT. Even coin doctors can't get them to rainbow target tone, you know, the guys who put out rolls of AT coins. 2) That coin only toned because it was HEAVILY cleaned.
I would like to first state that I have not read the entire thread, only the OP because I don't want my opinion to be influenced by anyone. Although I think the toning is attractive, it appears to be AT to me. The coin's surfaces are far too shiny and reflective for an SLQ in this grade. This coin was polished at some point and I believe that the polishing agent has had an effect on the toning of the coin. Due to the low grade of the coin however, I don't think that either the polishing or the toning will have a detrimental impact on the price. I would say this is a $10-$20 coin based on how much you like the appearance of the coin. Personally I would pass, I don't have any interest in circulated SLQ's.
OK, now that I have read the rest of the thread, I agree, it is a 1929-S and I am ashamed that I didn't even examine the date. The coin is a $5 coin tops.
No reason a circulated coin can't tone. Sometimes they can be very attractive indeed. Here is a Mercury Dime from my personal collection and a circulated 1916 SLQ that I almost pulled the trigger on last year.
Paul, Passing on that 1916 was a good move IMO. I know ya like toned coins, but every toned circ SLQ I own has been cleaned. Who cares if I spend $5 on a pos SLQ because it has a die clash ro something, but buying a key date coin that's worth big bucks.. I dunno about that. Saw a megadipped AU one at the Burlington show last weekend that was AT'd. Guy wanted $12k for it IIRC, I wouldnt buy it at any price.
