    @Thanks shepherd

    The 1970-S Proof struck over a 1941 Canadian quarter is well documented. If you do some research, you’ll see that a number of spectacular errors came out of the San Francisco mint in the early-mid 70’s. Many were found in an unclaimed safety deposit box and sold by the state of California after getting approval from the US Secret Service. The general consensus among knowledgeable error coin collectors and experts is that these “had a little help” being struck and leaving the mint. There is also a proof quarter struck over a 1900 Barber quarter!!! While these quarters technically are mint errors since they were made at the mint, they did not occur during normal production.

    If you study true overstruck coins, you’ll see that there’s a lot more visible than a random mark that vaguely resembles a digit. Even the 1970-S/1941 quarter has a good bit of the under type detail visible, and it was struck on a press used to make proofs which uses striking pressures higher than the normal business strike process.

    That’s why members can quickly say NO. They understand the minting and die making process, and how errors can occur (contrary to your comment suggesting they need to read more about errors). If you take their advice and study the minting process, in time you’ll be able to quickly and easily determine that your coin is not overstruck. It just has a random circulation mark that you want to believe is something special. It isn’t.

    If you still feel strongly that you do have something special and Coin Talk members have no idea what they're talking about, send to an authentication service. But, I would recommend saving your money instead.

    What he said.

    Shep,
    Welcome to CT. Here are a few hints when posting here regarding any coin that you have in hand:
    1) Always include in-focus pictures from more than 1 angle that clearly identify your item of discussion.
    2) If you decide to challenge a response that you don’t like, do so with specific (not circumstantial) evidence.
    3) To paraphrase Jamie from MythBusters: “Most folks here are what you call ‘experts’”. If you receive 2 or more opinions that are in agreement, there’s an EXCELLENT change that they’re going to be correct.

    Keep up the hunt and good luck!

    PS: In the very small, outside chance that you may actually have a true mint error, I promise you that everyone here that has challenged you would absolutely LOVE to be proven wrong.

    Thanks for the laughs and the reminder of this error, which by the way, did not occur during the normal minting process. It had help. It's a proof and that's the difference so best if you read and knew your topic before blasting us.

    Pleased send you coin in to NGC (the same TPG as per the 1970-S Proof over a 1941 Canadian Quarter). Once you've proven us wrong please post your coin again. Many experts have answered you correctly. It's not an error but please prove us to the truth. I do not consider myself an expert but I have been collecting coins for over 60 years of I know a little about them.

    I don't think its what you think. Send it off to NGC and see what they say. I truly hope you have something, but my money is on the experts here. When it comes back slabbed and graded, let the CT members know. I don't mind being wrong.
