Partially out of boredom, I have been slowly working a deal out with my LCS for his pile of Buffalo nickels. Well, they were a pile, but I sorted them by date and mintmark for him, then he priced them and I bought them. So I've spent the last couple days bent over my Cherrypickers Guide book and a loupe, and here are my favorite and biggest picks. Not pictured are more than a dozen lower value 2 feather varieties and a nice XF 1914-D. This amazing XF+ 1915-S was in there. Probably a $400 coin. This is a tough, high grade 1918 2 feather. This is a very elusive 1925-D 2 feather. First time finding one of these. 1929 DDO. 1930 DDO. Not a valuable coin, but first time cherrypicking one. 1930 DDR. 5 legged buffalo. I have found these before, but never in XF.
This was one of two 1935 DDR 's in the same roll! VF35 but the rims are a little bumpy. This might be the biggest find. Looks like an XF45 DDR. Incredible coin! So I think this is the 1915 DDO, but I am not 100% sure. Look at the eyelid, nose and nostril.
Well, it took me like 8 hours to sort into rolls and toss out the junk ones and you know... the VF 1937-P stuff that I didn't want. (He sent those off to a dealer who buys full and partial date buffs). Then he took a week or two in his spare time looking through them and pricing them. Basically he took the average grade in the roll, then priced them at like half of greysheet since I did all the work and sorting.
Never found a single one of those in the wild before, and BOOM! Two in the same roll in nice mid to high grades! I was stoked!
Gotta admit, I'm not terribly familiar with Buffernickel varieties - but that 35 DDR is killer. And, what's a "5-legged" buffalo. First time I've heard that term.
Nice! You have more patience than I do. I was hoping that you'd show a 1916 DDO but I'm sure you wish you found one too!
There's some nice stuff there! The '25-D 2 feather is one of the toughest for the variety. And the last '35 DDR-001 is a real winner! I can't quite tell for sure on the 1915 but you can go here-http://www.varietyvista.com/ to compare it with the images there.
Cool. The one thing I never had in all my years of buffalo collecting is a big hoard to search. I searched a few small hoards but they were mostly junk. The '15-S is remarkable!!
