I've been explaining to CFE members that PayPal's so-called protection is not as good as a credit card's protection and why my setup I'm still working on, is even better than PayPal but none of them have run into a situation where they couldn't get a refund, like you and I have. :(

Can you see if you have the seller's address somewhere and PM me with it, if you do? ;)

Many sellers are now "sweeping" their accounts and not just the crooks. We do it at work. My cousin is a huge baseball card seller and he does it as well.

Why? - because under ebay's new system it is getting much easier for buyers to rip off sellers. We sent a coin to Germany some time ago. Guy wanted absolutely NO insurance and then claimed he didn't get it and pulled his payment back.
Paypal basically said go to Germany and prove he got it.

Of course it should have had insurance no questions asked and believe me it is that way now. Still, the possibility exists.
My co worker lists all of our auctions and it gets even sillier. We know exactly how much it will cost so ship and we charge accordingly.
He is constantly getting little "reminders" from ebay that the shipping charges seem high.

Perhaps ebay should contact the USPS on this one?

Sorry, a bit off topic but wanted to share with the class.

that's great that y'all do that, but I have run out of fingers and toes to count the number of times that shipping was $5.00 and then get a coin in a 2x2 in a regular envelope with a stamp on it.

This whole thread is about problems with Ebay, whether it be scams ran by users or scams ran by Ebay, so I thought your comments were well placed. ;) But I'm not one that thinks TMI is a bad thing. :goofer:

Not exactly! All kinds of peeps had to be contacted and they brought this about. We were not listened to on our reports into Ebay. :( We've resorted to other tactics lately.

On this one, since we couldn't prove it was a scam, I called PayPal and warned them it was a probable scam that they should flag, so they could withhold the funds until the buyer leaves positive feedback. If it was a stolen pic, the buyer wouldn't have received anything so PayPal could have given the buyer his money back but if it happened to be a fluke and the seller did have the coin (authentic), then the monies would be released and no major harm done. However, when the seller was tickled to sell it for 8K outside of Ebay, that's when things turned and the likelihood of it being a counterfeit came into play. So that member contacted someone he knew to check the bank account for the wire transfer and there were some problems with it, so he contacted the proper authorities about the situation and then sent the emails to the Compliance Department at Ebay. Between the emails and authorities contacting Ebay, Ebay finally did the right thing. However, expect to see it again. The seller has already stipulated he's going to relist it. :goof:

Ps: That's the 3rd newbie scammer (zero feedback), in the last week or so, that we've gotten NARU'd so our new tactics appear to be working. :thumb:

I know what you're saying rdo believe me. Paypal has made this a bigger problem unfortunately.
I have never had a problem paying a bit extra for a well package item even it was a bit over what the actual postage was. Why? because in many cases an employer is paying someone by the hour to ensure proper packaging and mailing.

When I did more selling personally I would gladly send a coin in a 2x2 with a bit of padding in a regular envelope for 50 cents in many cases. Of course it was at the BUYER'S risk and since I did not accept Paypal I had money in hand when I shipped. I had ONE incident with that on a $10 coin. Turned out he was a regular customer so I sent him a similar item in it's stead. No questions asked as he was a good customer.

Now with Paypal it's a different story. If you can NOT document shipping and insurance any buying scammer can claim they did not receive a coin and back out the payment. Hey, I've seen people do it because "after the fact" they decided they paid too much.
Too bad in my opinion. If you bid you should be expected to own up to it.

    I'm digressing again.;)

Bottom line is we now require insurance period and the buyer signs for the package. This raises shipping charges unfortunately but no seller wants to ship a coin away that someone else may have actually paid for.
Ebay can't seem to figure this out.
